Reflecting on 2025, I'm immensely proud of how our small but mighty team has yet again risen to the challenge of ever-growing cancer incidence. The impact of our cancer support and survivorship services has grown enormously with our nursing team engaging with more than 22,000 people throughout the country and our influence as a trusted charity extending further. With the guidance of our Board, hard work and commitment of our amazing team, and support from an army of volunteers, donors and supporters, we were privileged to be able to help thousands of people and their families throughout the year. We now look forward with optimism to the years ahead focused on our new Strategic Plan 2026 - 2028 with a clear roadmap for the future aligning with the next National Cancer Strategy. Peter Patrick a father of 3 originally from Antrim but now living in Greystones, Wicklow was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Spring of 2012. He was aware of the importance of being prostate health vigilant as he had taken part in a Movember fundraiser for his local cancer centre in November 2010 and he was proactive in getting his PSA checked from then on. The following November, his GP noticed a change in his PSA level which caused concern. "My GP noticed a change in my PSA level in November 2011 and subsequently arranged two further blood tests in December 2011 and then January 2012. The PSA level had nearly doubled over the course of a month. I was referred to SVUH and after scans and a biopsy, prostate cancer was confirmed. I started external radiotherapy, after approximately halfway through that I had brachytherapy. There was quite serious inflammation in my waterworks after that and it was some months before that was resolved. Approximately seven years later, my PSA levels increased again. After a PET/PSMA scan, I was told the cancer was in lymph nodes in my groin and the cancer was incurable but manageable. I started hormone therapy treatment, and I am still on that and my PSA is now 0.03. I am living with prostate cancer thanks to new treatments available. My advice to men about their prostate heath and their health generally is to be proactive, to have yearly bloods done. My GP picked up on the difference in PSA from my previously taken bloods. Without this, I would never have known. Give yourself the best chance of catching prostate cancer early when it is highly treatable. Stand Up for Your Prostate!" Central to its inclusive approach, the Foundation works closely with disadvantaged communities that are often disproportionately affected by cancer. Providing people with clear, accessible information and advice will allow them to make informed decisions about their health and eliminate the fear that might deter individuals from seeking help. In addition to education and awareness services the Foundation offers a range of supports to assist cancer patients and their families throughout their cancer journey, including financial aid, the transition to life after cancer and living with an advanced cancer. Despite increasing demand for its services, which are provided free of charge, the Foundation is heavily reliant on its own fundraising. Phiri Fadson Tibani is a husband and father from South Africa who moved to Ireland in 2024. In 2023 Phiri noticed some issues with urine constriction that caused him concern, and he took the appropriate steps by seeking medical advice. He was informed that he had a very enlarged prostate and was given medication to relax the prostate muscles. At no stage was he given any indication that he should be concerned about cancer. He moved to Dublin in 2024 assuming he had taken the right measures and that the medication would fix any issues. Unfortunately, this was not the case and he was diagnosed with stage 2 prostate cancer in January 2025. Phiri is sharing his story to highlight the importance of being proactive when it comes to your prostate health and taking to your GP if you have any concerns. Early detection leads to an easier treatment path and more positive outcomes.
