Built-in support for sending keycloak events via webhooks
#41175
Keycloak currently lacks built-in webhook support for sending events to external systems. Currently, adding webhook support requires either building a custom SPI or using third-party ones developed by the community (eg: p2-inc/keycloak-events, vymalo/keycloak-webhook). This is cumbersome because:
It requires writing Java code and understanding Keycloak internals.
You need to modify and rebuild the base Keycloak image.
This is especially frustrating for common use cases which should ideally be achievable through simple configuration rather than custom code.
Adding built-in support would eliminate the need to write and maintain custom SPIs and make it easier to design external systems that react based on keyclock events.
Basic Features it could include:
Ability to subscribe to events that are of interest (eg: admin.USER-CREATE, admin.GROUP-CREATE) instead of sending all events. An admin should ideally be able to configure this via the UI.
Webhook signature mechanism (eg: HMAC) to verify that event payload sent by the webhook hasn’t been tampered with.
There are also a couple of existing discussions around this idea in the community:
