Description
Image Upload System - Future Enhancements Master Issue
This master issue consolidates all future improvements for the image upload system. The core functionality is complete and working in production.
✅ Current State (Already Implemented)
The image upload feature is production-ready with:
- ✅ Multi-file upload (up to 5 images, 10MB each)
- ✅ Image processing with 3 sizes (original, medium, thumbnail)
- ✅ R2 storage integration with cleanup on failure (🐛 Bug: Add transaction handling for image upload database operations #68, 🐛 Bug: Implement cleanup for orphaned files on upload failure #69)
- ✅ Transaction handling for data consistency
- ✅ Rate limiting and security measures
- ✅ Comprehensive test coverage
- ✅ Progress tracking with SSE
- ✅ Image validation (magic bytes, size, format)
- ✅ Upload size limits aligned (🟡 Security: Align file upload size limits across nginx and application #84) - nginx and app limits now match
🔄 Future Enhancements (Consolidated from multiple issues)
High Priority
1. Memory Management for Large Batches (#62)
Priority: P1 - High
- Implement streaming processing for large images
- Add memory monitoring and limits
- Prevent OOM errors when processing multiple 10MB images
- Related to: ⚡ Performance: Implement parallel image processing with concurrency control #66 (parallel processing)
2. Production-Ready Progress Tracking (#63)
Priority: P1 - High
- Replace in-memory Map with persistent storage (Redis or database)
- Add automatic cleanup of stale progress entries
- Implement TTL for progress data
- Support horizontal scaling across multiple instances
- Prevent memory leaks from unbounded growth
- Current issue: In-memory tracking won't work in multi-server deployments
Medium Priority
3. Upload Size Limit Alignment (#84) ✅ COMPLETED
Priority: P2 - Medium
Ensure nginx (100MB) and app (10MB) limits are alignedDocument why limits differ (chunked uploads vs single file)Add clear error messages for size violations- Status: Completed - nginx now uses 52M limit (aligned with 5 files × 10MB + overhead)
4. User Experience Improvements (#72, #59)
Priority: P2 - Medium
- Add retry mechanism for failed uploads (Add retry mechanism for failed image uploads in UI #59)
- Improve progress indicators
- Better error messages
- Upload preview before submission
- Drag & drop enhancements
5. Photo Editing for Approved Submissions (#103)
Priority: P2 - Medium
- Allow users to add photos to their approved submissions
- Photo-only edit (no data changes)
- Admin full edit capability
- Correction request workflow
Low Priority
6. Performance Optimizations (#66, #61, #53)
Priority: P3 - Low
- Parallel image processing with concurrency control (⚡ Performance: Implement parallel image processing with concurrency control #66)
- Worker threads for CPU-intensive operations (Consider using worker threads for image processing #61)
- AWS Lambda for offloading (Future Enhancement: Offload image processing to AWS Lambda #53) - infrastructure change
7. Monitoring & Metrics (#71)
Priority: P3 - Low
- Upload success/failure rates< 8000 /li>
- Processing time metrics
- Storage usage tracking
- Error rate monitoring
8. Code Quality & Documentation (#70, #60)
Priority: P3 - Low
- Refactoring opportunities (✨ Enhancement: Code quality improvements for image upload feature #70)
- API documentation (Add API documentation for image upload endpoints #60)
- Code comments and examples
📋 Consolidated Issues
This master issue consolidates and supersedes:
- Future Enhancement: Offload image processing to AWS Lambda #53 - AWS Lambda offloading
- Add retry mechanism for failed image uploads in UI #59 - Retry mechanism
- Add API documentation for image upload endpoints #60 - API documentation
- Consider using worker threads for image processing #61 - Worker threads
- 🔴 Critical: Memory management risk when processing multiple large images #62 - Memory management (HIGH PRIORITY)
- 🔴 Critical: In-memory progress tracking won't scale in production #63 - Production-ready progress tracking (HIGH PRIORITY)
- ⚡ Performance: Implement parallel image processing with concurrency control #66 - Parallel processing
- ✨ Enhancement: Code quality improvements for image upload feature #70 - Code quality
- 📊 Enhancement: Add monitoring and metrics for image upload feature #71 - Monitoring
- 🎨 UX Enhancement: Improve image upload user experience #72 - UX improvements
🟡 Security: Align file upload size limits across nginx and application #84 - Upload size limits✅ COMPLETED- Allow limited editing of approved submissions #103 - Photo editing for approved submissions (MEDIUM PRIORITY)
🎯 Implementation Priority
- Immediate (P1): 🔴 Critical: Memory management risk when processing multiple large images #62 Memory management, 🔴 Critical: In-memory progress tracking won't scale in production #63 Progress tracking
- Next (P2): 🎨 UX Enhancement: Improve image upload user experience #72/Add retry mechanism for failed image uploads in UI #59 UX, Allow limited editing of approved submissions #103 Photo editing
- Future (P3): Performance, monitoring, documentation
📝 Notes
- Core image upload feature is complete and stable
- These are enhancements, not bugs
- Prioritize based on user feedback and production needs
- Some enhancements may never be needed (AWS Lambda)
