  • Today we celebrate World Maritime Day. This year's United Nations and International Maritime Organization theme, "From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence", is focused on turning regulations into tangible results. In Q2 2026, The Mission to Seafarers' Happiness Index found a decline in overall happiness to 6.87/10, down from 7.18/10 in Q1, with excessive workloads, including heavy paperwork, among the pressures on seafarers. This points towards a critical gap the industry lives with every day: the distance between the rule and the routine. At NAPA, we are helping to close this gap on three fronts: First, with NAPA Checklist and NAPA Permit to Work, the record becomes a by-product of doing the work. A guided digital workflow takes crews through each step as it happens and captures every action in the moment. It feeds straight into NAPA Logbook, so no log or record needs to be re-typed or reconstructed at the end of a watch, and the record reflects what really happened on board. Second, that same digital record removes the repetitive admin that fills a seafarer's day. Our advanced electronic logbook replaces manual, duplicated log-keeping with entries captured once and reused, freeing crews to focus on what matters most: operating the ship safely. Anthony Veder, for instance, has documented close to 2,000 administrative hours saved per vessel per year with NAPA Logbook. Third, with NAPA Fleet Intelligence, that captured record reaches the people who make the decisions in real time. So, shore teams, DPAs, and superintendents see not just the status but its source, timestamp, and evidence, in time to act on it. All three are built on the same idea: policy only matters when it is followed, and crews and shore teams shouldn't have to fight their tools to make that happen. Read more about our solutions. Permit to Work compliance is one of the most administratively heavy parts of running a cruise fleet, and one of the least visible from shore. Our recent feature in Cruise Industry News looks at how NAPA Fleet Intelligence's AI Permit dashboard is changing that for early adopters Virgin Voyages and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. The highlights: → Virgin Voyages fleet captain Marco Carsjens described the old way: waiting for reports, or trawling through the data manually, vessel by vessel. → Admin load is an industry-wide problem that lands hard on cruise. ISWAN - SOUTH ASIA research found 54% of seafarers report rising workloads, with manual admin tasks taking up to 20% of crew time. On a cruise ship, that pressure concentrates on safety officers managing permit activity across large crews and constant port calls. → The payoff from digitizing this work is documented: NAPA customers using digital logbooks have reclaimed up to 2,000 admin hours per vessel a year by digitalizing record-keeping. → The AI is trained on the structure of permit data, not operational data, so raw fleet data never passes through the AI layer when queries run. For safety officers managing analytics across multiple vessels, the shift is practical: describe what you need in plain English, and see it across the fleet instantly. • The #WAPS fleet is scaling. Is #voyageplanning keeping up? The route looks right. The numbers look fine. And a share of the WAPS savings never shows up. That's the quiet failure mode on wind-assisted ships - and it isn't the hardware. Retrofits are delivering 5–20% fuel savings in real operation. It's the planning software that hasn't caught up. Most weather routing tools still treat wind as resistance to route around. Where wind-assist is accounted for at all, it's a thrust bonus added on top - not a model of how wind angle, engine load and sea state interact on a specific hull. That's a commercial problem as much as an operational one. Under time charter, owners pay for the installation and charterers collect the fuel savings. Without voyage-level attribution that separates what the sails delivered from what the weather delivered, there's nothing to negotiate from. Mikko Vartiainen, Wind Assisted Vessel Optimization Lead at NAPA, shares what voyage planning has to do to earn the full return on a WAPS retrofit: 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/eTceHJUb #VoyageOptimization #Decarbonization #MerchantShips

  • Ask any maritime compliance manager what actually keeps them up, and it's rarely the big things. It's the small ones: is the checklist a ship is running right now the version shoreside approved last week? Are the right checks being done, in the right order, as the rules require? As operations grow more complex, safety and consistency can't rest on paper and memory. And when no two ships are alike, every procedure has to be right, current, and recorded. That's the gap HX Expeditions set out to close when it helped us develop the new NAPA Checklist. Vsevolod Pashkov, Maritime Compliance Manager and CSO, HX Expeditions, explains the benefit of a digitalized checklist for shoreside teams: “We will have direct control over the content of the checklists, which means we can push an update to the vessels, separately or to the whole fleet... We expect it to bring greater consistency and efficiency to daily operations on board, reduce duplicate admin, and improve real-time information flow between ship and shore.” For the crew, that means guided digital workflows, fewer errors and omissions, and operations that are always audit-ready. Every action is recorded automatically, with a timestamp and the name of the person who completed it, and fed into the ship's logbook. "We see potential to gain efficiency in our auditing, because we will be able to review the records beforehand and already have a good picture of how the ship is doing before embarking on board," Vsevolod adds. 🎥 Hear more directly from Vsevolod Pashkov in this video. • As vessels get more complex, the way designs are evaluated and approved is also undergoing a fundamental shift, from 2D drawings to 3D model-based review. At this year’s ‘ICCAS 2026: International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding,’ NAPA will be presenting a research on how the open class exchange (OCX) standard is powering that transition to support a 3D model-based classification approval process. The OCX Standard and the Transition to 3D Model-Based Classification: Industry-Wide Impacts Presented by Ludmila Seppälä, Director of Product Research, NAPA, and co-authored with DNV, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's Register, PROSTEP AG and Cadmatic. 📅 Tuesday 15th September 2026 ⏰11:20-11:40 am This paper, developed in close collaboration with leading classification societies and software vendors across the industry, looks at how the OCX format can champion a standardized method for exchanging 3D ship structural models. The research explores applications of OCX to support model-based workflows in cross-disciplinary ship design. We're looking forward to sharing more on this research with the ICCAS community. • The difference between digitization and digitalization is less subtle than it appears. In a recent interview with TradeWinds, our Executive Vice President of Safety Solutions, Esa Henttinen, talked about why that distinction matters. With new fuels, regulations and technologies all transforming crew workload, the introduction of any new system, AI included, needs to alleviate a seafarer’s cognitive overload, not just change the medium of work. Fuel savings are the most quantifiable ROI of digitalization but they only capture a fraction of the value a well-implemented digital program delivers. Improved safety outcomes are equally important: incidents avoided, permit-related accidents prevented, operational and administrative efficiency improvements, faster port turnaround, fewer deficiencies at PSC inspection, and the knock-on effect all of this has on crew wellbeing and retention. Esa illustrates the opportunity of digitalization with what might sound small on paper but costs crew real time and risk - paper and static PDF checklists. “8 out of 10 accidents recorded over the last ten years on board ships have occurred due to human error, due to a lack of digitalized processes”. NAPA Checklist addresses this gap with a guided digital workflow: crew are walked through each step in order, every action is timestamped and completed tasks feed straight into NAPA Logbook so shoreside can also see the status of any checklist, on any ship, in real time. No extra admin, no duplicated data entry. Instead, you build standardized, complete data and the additional peace of mind that steps are being completed as they should be, helping reinforce crew training.
