Security Audit Workflow Revamp

We have streamlined the Security Audit process. In the Editor, you can now initiate an audit by clicking the Security Audit button or by clicking the AI icon.

This will bring up the Security Checklist modal. There are more than 70 security checklists to choose from! You can have RemixAI select the appropriate security checklists for your contract by selecting AI match.

Clicking the Audit <your contract name>.sol button will start the audit.

The audit checklists get saved in the File Explorer in the audits folder.

If you had initiated an audit with the LLM selection in auto mode, Remix will ask if you want to specify a frontier model for a more thorough audit.

Using one of the open-source LLMs are at least 10x cheaper than Sonnet 5.

Once your choice has been made, the audit process begins. Of course, you can also just tell RemixAI in the chat to start an audit.

Audits will start with a Slither static analysis, and then go through the checklists. These security audits are static, so they do not include fuzzing or executional analysis.

After the audit is complete, in the RemixAI chat you’ll be prompted for a target audience for an audit summary. This report will be in addition to the default audit summary.

The audit’s reports will be put into the audit_report folder inside a folder named for the contract getting reviewed and inside another timestamped sub-folder.

Each checklist gets its own report with a summary report (summary.md) for the entire audit. Each time you run an audit, it will be saved in a new timestamped folder. The image above shows what the summary_beginner.md looks like for this audit.

New Solidity Templates Added to the Template Explorer

To see the new Solidity template options, make a new Workspace to get to the Template Explorer.

Then select New workspace.

The Template Explorer will open. Scroll down to view the new categories, starting with DEFI PROTOCOLS. You will also find new sections for GOVERNANCE & IDENTITY, ACCOUNT ABSTRACTION & PROXIES, and NFT & BRIDGES.

Fill-in Variables with AI

When testing a contract, you often need well-formatted random data inputs. Now in Deploy & Run, you can select Auto-Full with AI Samples to populate a given field.

Whether a field expects an address or a bytes32 array, valid sample data is automatically generated, saving you the time of manually sourcing examples.

Ask RemixAI in the Editor

Quick action buttons have been added to the bottom of the Editor to: Edit contract, Explain contract, Generate a Frontend, or run a Security Audit or Gas Audit. You can also access these features by clicking the RemixAI icon. These controls appear automatically whenever a smart contract is open in the Editor.

Updates to RemixAI

We’ve have updated RemixAI for improved performance and efficiency. When the LLM selection is in Auto mode, RemixAI now displays the LLM that was used.

Let RemixAI choose the Security Checklist

Did you know that there are 72 security checklists to choose from? RemixAI uses the comprehensive security checklists from Cyfrin/Solodit, and each one covers a specific attack vector. That’s a lot of choices! In this release, you can now have RemixAI choose the appropriate security checklist for your smart contract.

To see the checklists, and to let RemixAI load the ones it suggests as appropriate for your contract:

1. Put a Solidity contract for auditing in the Editor.

2. Load the security checklist modal by clicking on the Audit button in the RemixAI chat:

   

3. Then click the Load Audit Checklist option.

4. Click the AI match button:

5. RemixAI will then select the appropriate checklists.

6. Click the Generate Checklists button to load these checklists into the File Explorer.

The checklist(s) will be added to the audits folder in the File Explorer.

7. Start an audit by using a prompt like this:

Upon completion of the audit, a report will be created in the audits folder.

New x402 Endpoints to Run Audits

• / mcp/x402/get_audit_checklist selects which of the Cyfrin/Solodit Security Checklists should be used for an audit, and outputs a .md file of the checklist

Easy Access to Low-cost AI Models

We’ve added a switch to tell RemixAI to use only the low-cost models:

We have over 200 LLMs to choose from, and have now added a search bar to more easily select your preferred LLM.

New Switch for Vibe Coders

We’ve added a switch to maximize the RemixAI Chat for those of you who don’t want to see both the AI Chat and the code.

Better Guidance for QuickDApp Workflow

We’ve added a modal that appears after you click the Create a DApp button:

In the More options section, you can opt to make your dApp a Base mini-app, and/or add a Subgraph to optimize calling chosen blockchain data.

QuickDApp-generated dApps can now be attached to multiple contracts

First, create a dApp that is connected to a single contract. Then, to attach additional contracts, click the Ask AI to Update button.

A modal will then come up. Select the Add a deployed contract to input the contract’s address, and to give RemixAI instructions about how to integrate the new contract(s).

A QuickDApp-generated dApp can now have up to eight contracts attached to it AND can also connect to Subgraphs and ZK Proofs.

Multi-contract support is not simply about passing multiple contract addresses to the AI. Previously, generated code could become tightly coupled to specific contract addresses or ABIs. Now, the flow has been strengthened so that QuickDApp connects contracts based on managed runtime configuration.

The DApp and the current Deploy & Run environment must also be on the same network.

QuickDApp Advice:

Before you get going with QuickDApp, we have found it works best with the Claude Sonnet LLM. So, we recommend specifying that LLM before you begin making your dApp.

UI Improvements to Deploy & Run

We’ve added “tabs” to Deploy & Run. Deployment is now in a separate tab from Deployed Contracts. We’ve also added a Transaction History section.

To deploy, go to the Deploy tab:

Then after deployment, the tab automatically focusses to the Deployed contracts tab:

To view the transactions in this session, go to the Transaction History tab:

In this tab, you can save your transactions and replay them in another context. This means you can run a bunch of transactions in the RemixVM, save those transactions, edit the saved file, and replay the transactions on a public network. See the docs for the Transaction Recorder for more info.

What does this mean for you?

• New Users: If you are new to Remix or do not have local files stored in your browser, you will be automatically redirected to app.remix.live.

• Existing Users: We are committed to making this transition as seamless as possible. Follow the instructions in the "Move Your Workspaces” tab in the Editor. If you don’t see that tab, open the Workspace select box:

Migrating your work to app.remix.live takes just two steps:

1. While at the old url, you should download your current Workspaces in a .zip file to your desktop, and then…

2. Go to https://app.remix.live/#migrate=import.

There will be easy instructions in a modal on https://remix.ethereum.org to walk you through the process.

Why Migrating is Essential

Unless you are on Remix Pro or Remix Starter plans and using Cloud Storage or using Remix Desktop, Remix auto-saves your Workspaces to your browser’s storage. But, your browser storage under one URL cannot be shared with browser storage of another URL, so you will need to migrate.

BTW, If you have not tried the Cloud Storage feature of Remix Pro, sign up for a plan and then open up the Cloud Storage option:

Then, when you turn it on, you can open the Workspace select box and migrate your Workspaces to the cloud.

Of course you’ll need a Remix Pro or Remix Starter plan to use this feature.

Optimization of OpenRouter

In release v2.5.4, we added hundreds of LLMs with OpenRouter and AWS Bedrock, and added the Auto Mode option that automates LLM choice based on the context of your prompt. We also limited the “Bring your own…” API key to OpenRouter and AWS Bedrock. So, if you have have an existing Anthropic API key, you can now route it through OpenRouter in Remix:

1. Set up a free account with OpenRouter and input your Anthropic API key there (or whatever API key you have a plan with)

2. Get your OpenRouter API key

3. Input that key into Remix

Another advantage of OpenRouter is their promotions for free AI usage. To learn more, go to OpenRouter.ai

In this release we’ve also optimized OpenRouter functionality within Remix. This is an ongoing process, but you should already see much better AI efficiency and results than last week, or before.

Updates to QuickDApp

We’ve integrated multi-contract support for QuickDApp. When you use multiple contracts, you set up a contract binding.

• When creating a DApp, you can select one Primary Contract and up to 7 additional deployed contracts.

• After creation, you can add another deployed contract or a the contract used by the dApp.

• The replacement must be selected and confirmed through the UI from the contracts actually deployed in the current Deploy & Run environment.

• The AI cannot choose an arbitrary address from the conversation.

But note, contracts cannot be mixed across networks, contract bindings cannot be removed, and the Primary role cannot be reassigned to another existing binding. And you cannot use contract deployed to the Remix VM.

Users are now be able to create DApps and deploy contracts without being restricted by the current selected Workspace, and safely add or replace contract bindings from other open Workspaces through one QuickDApp update flow.

Bring Your Own API Key for OpenRouter or AWS Bedrock

Remix has moved LLM management to OpenRouter and AWS Bedrock. This means users will now be able to use their own API keys from these two services within Remix, but it also means user API keys for Anthropic accounts, for instance, will no longer work within Remix. You can only bring your own OpenRouter and AWS Bedrock keys now.

To use your own API keys, go to the Settings Panel, and click the gear icon. Then, toggle on the switch to the right of Use your own API Keys.

Bug Fixes

In this release we fixed a bug in the UML Generator plugin. Did you know Remix has a UML generator that will make a UML diagram from a Solidity contract? Well now you do, and it’s working even better! To launch the UML Generator, right click a .sol file in the File Explorer and choose the Generate UML option in the pop-up menu.

We also fixed a bug for copying the bytecode in a deployed contract.

Naming Smart Contracts

When you give a human readable name to your smart contract, you close a large security hole. Remix has now implemented this ENS feature. Read more about contract naming here.

A contract to be named needs to be an Ownable contract. So have your contract inherit the OpenZepplin Ownable contract or something similar. Then deploy it to a public network - but not work on Sepolia. Then click the kebab dots for the popup menu and select Name Contract:

Then you’ll fill in the label and the project name:

Then set up the Reverse Name. But to do that you will first need to make a transaction with the contract signed by the contract’s owner. So make that transaction and then set the Reverse Name.

To the right of the Set Reverse button (current it is hard to see) is the “Skip” button.

Clicking that will bring you to this screen where you can go to the ENS app to find out more info about your contract:

Circom Proofs - Verifying and Generating dApps

Verify Circom Proofs on zkVerify

In the Circom Compiler plugin, you can now verify a proof with zkVerify. The zkVerify service faster and cheaper than verifying proofs onchain directly from your contract. Read more about zkVerify and the Kurier network. To verify the proofs, they must use the Groth16 proving scheme.

Before you verify, you’ll need to input an API key in the Settings panel for zkVerify.

Make a dApp for a ZK Proof

To start playing with Circom circuits in Remix make a new workspace with one of the Circom templates or instruct RemixAI to generate you a Circom circuit. Then when you use compile it, then run the setup and the power of Tau, you can create a ZK dApp with QuickDApp.

Then QuickDApp will ask some questions in the RemixAI Assistant panel.

QuickDApp Can Write a DApp’s Documentation

After you have launched QuickDApp, in the dApp setup panels, there is now a section to have RemixAI write documentation of the dApp.

AI Audits with Checklists update

RemixAI can audit your contracts with a Slither scan. But now you can also select from over 47 different checklists from the Cyfrin Audit Checklists repo within Remix for covering many types of attack categories. AI Audits with Checklists ensure you know that the AI tool is going to check for specific vulnerabilities.

Access the checklists by typing “/Load Security Audit Checklist” into the prompt box or by clicking on the Tools pill.

Start an audit by going to the AI Assistant and typing “/audit” or click the tools pill.

• If a checklist has already been loaded, it will have the “in workspace” badge.

• If you load too many checklists, your audits could take a long time to run and will use a lot of AI resources.

The checklists get stored in the Workspace’s audit folder.

If you have already selected your checklist of choice, when the Checklist Modal comes up, hit the X button to close it. Then RemixAI will ask which contract you want to audit. It will run a Slither Scan and a security audit based on the security checklists you’ve selected.

An audit report will be created and saved in the audit_report folder.

Code Helper Now Can Analyze the Entire Contract

The Code Helper is triggered when you highlight a snippet of code or an entire function. It will explain some code and/or give security advice.

Clicking on “Open in RemixAI Assistant” will copy the code into the RemixAI with a prompt of instructions.

Clicking on “Analyze complete file” will copy the entire file into the RemixAI with a slightly different prompt of instructions.

The Graph & Subgraph Integrations

Subgraph Queries in Remix

When a file in the Editor has a .subgraph extension, the “Compile” button becomes the “Run Query” button:

When you run the query, the results will be on the right side of the screen.

Try Querying a Subgraph from Remix!

1. Go to The Subgraph Explorer and search for a Subgraph query, then paste that into a file in Remix with a .subgraph extension.

2. Grab the Query URL (the endpoint) and paste that into the top of the .subgraph file, adding a link like this:

3. Update that line so the square brackets after the /api/ don’t contain anything (see example above)

4. Input your Graph API key to the “Connected Services” section of Settings.

5. Run the Query!

The response will be in the right side of the Editor.

You can also ask RemixAI if a Subgraph exists. And, you can ask it to help you form your Subgraph Queries!

Subgraph Queries in Remix for Local Subgraphs

For local Subgraph development, you’ll need to use Remix Desktop. Because Remix Desktop is a local app, you’ll have access to your native terminal, so you can install The Graph CLI. Then you can run queries against data on a local chain—usually the Hardhat or Anvil chains. The header at the top of the .subgraphfile for local queries will look like this:

In the File Explorer, right-click on a file with a .subgraph extension. In the pop-up menu, select “Create DApp from Subgraph Query”.

Then respond to the questions from RemixAI. QuickDApp will launch, and you can then deploy to IPFS and set up a URL for your dApp. On smaller screens you might need to scroll down to see the deployment and naming tools.

Bring Your Own LLM API Key

Bring your AI subscriptions into Remix. Just go to the “RemixAI Assistant” section in the Settings panel, scroll to the bottom, and input your API key.

Buttons for Example Prompts and AI Tools

You can view example prompts by clicking any of the “pills” above the prompt box. You can also access the modals for Skills, Audit Checklists, as well as a trigger for Gas Optimization audits.

Trigger a List of Actions with /

Type “/” into the RemixAI Chat to select from the list of actions you can add to your prompt.

For example, you can input the following in the RemixAI chat:

/compile SupplyChain.sol

and it will compile the file automatically.

AI Skills Library

You can now add AI skills to your Workspace by typing /Load Skills into the prompt box. That will bring up a modal with over 70 skills to choose from. Use the Search box or just browse through the our Skills library. If you don’t find one you like, assemble your own skill .md file and upload it.

Security Checklists

If you ask RemixAI to audit your smart contract, it will run a Slither scan by default. In this release, you can now add security checklists to have the RemixAI check for specific issues. There are over 47 different checklists for covering many types of attack categories. These security checklist are from the Cyfrin Audit Checklists repo.

Gas Optimization

You can start a Gas Optimization audit by entering “/Start Gas Optimization Audit” in the prompt box. RemixAI will ask you which contract you are trying to optimize, and list the focus areas. The Gas Optimization checklist is derived from the Rareskill Book of Gas Optimization.

Approving AI Changes

RemixAI will always ask for permission before making changes to files in your Workspace.

When you click Review Changes, you can check the proposed updates.

RemixAI Code Helper

Highlight some test in the Editor (when logged in to Remix) and a new pop-up will appear.

You can use it to explain a function or any snippet of code and to give suggestions for improvement. It focuses on security suggestions for your code.

QuickDApp - the Front-end Builder

We’ve made a big update to QuickDApp. Check out the QuickDapp docs on how to generate UIs for your contracts, deploy them to IPFS, and give them an ENS subdomain name.

You can style your dApp as you like. You can also make it a Base Mini-app. Then, you can deploy it and choose an ENS subdomain. But, to do this….

Deploy & Run Update

A week ago we released Remix v2, that contained some large updates to both the front-end and the back-end of the Deploy & Run panel. In release v2.1.0 have made some updates to address the following elements:

Environment Selection

We have added a caret to ensure that everyone knows how to change the primary environment and the secondary environment.

The chain and account selection are contained in a "sticky" section. In this release, we have incorporated additional shading to emphasize that this section remains visible while the rest of the panel content scrolls underneath.

Function Selection

We have put the functions of a deployed contract into a select box that also contains a search box.

Click on the select box to see the functions.

Choose the function and it will appear below:

The transferOwner function above has a yellow dot to its left, which indicates that it is a Write function. Functions with a blue dot are READ functions. And functions with a red dot are PAYABLE functions. Its the same color coding that had been in the earlier versions of Remix.

Bug Fixes

We fixed a few bugs in the Settings panel and in the AI Chat history. We also fixed a but in the Debugger’s stack. A big shoutout to LB-thomasp for pointing that out to us!

MCP Integrations

While not a new feature in this version of Remix, it is worth highlighting that the RemixAI Chat is integrated with the RemixAPI, OpenZeppelin, Web Search, and Slither. Consequently, every Remix user can execute prompts such as:

Make a new file with erc20Votes contract from OpenZeppelin and put it in the Editor.

Run a Slither scan on the file in the Editor.

In this Beta, Remix has the following choice of LLMs:

Announcing Remix v2!

The Web3 space is evolving rapidly, and Remix is evolving with it! We are becoming a specialized, AI-enhanced development platform designed to guide builders seamlessly from smart contract creation to dApp deployment. With the new Remix MCP, the entire app can be run from our RemixAI Chat. We have integrated with the MCPs of OpenZeppelin, Alchemy, The Graph, and Etherscan—with more on the way. Out of the box, our toolset can now give you a finely tuned AI for Web3 development. To make these updates, we comprehensively retooled some of our key plugins, including Deploy & Run and the Debugger.

The Deploy & Run Makeover

The Environment section now has a sub-selection, so when connecting to the Remix VM, it’s easy to choose the EVM fork.

The connected network is displayed in the Deploy section:

The Deploy section contains the active contract, which can be now be compiled right in the panel.

Clicking on the kebab icon (the three vertical dots to the right of a compiled contract) will show options to copy the ABI or the bytecode:

Gas & Value Controls Now Inside the Deploy Section

Clicking the + Add Contract button will reveal the section previously known as AtAddress. We had previously called it AtAddress because it brings into Remix an interface to an on-chain contract at the input address. It still does that same thing, but we are now calling it: + Add Contract.

Deployed Contract’s Functions

The Deploy section is collapsible. When you deploy a contract, the deployed instance appears in its closed position, but clicking on it will open it up to reveal its functions:

To interact with a function, click on it and a new section will open:

At the very bottom of Deploy & Run is the Transaction Recorder:

The Transaction Recorder has been in Deploy & Run for many years, but it was a bit hidden before now. It can save your transactions in a .json file where you can replay them in a different context. For example, you can interact with a series of functions in the Remix VM, and then replay the transactions on a public network!

Revamped Debugger

The Debugger now takes up both the left panel and the bottom panel where the Execution Trace now lives.

The Debugger and the RemixAI Assistant can work together to get your bugs fixed and your contract optimized.

Chat History and More

Now when you refresh Remix, you won’t lose your chat history. This means that you can learn from your previous prompts, and also that RemixAI can pull in your previous prompts to give you better answers.

If you switch to another project and want to ask the LLM a different set of questions, just hit the New chat button!

And, if you want to save a chat and put it aside, Archive it!

There are times when it’s best to have your full focus on the conversation with RemixAI chat, so we have added a clickable maximize icon:

There will also be times when you need to tell RemixAI to stop returning information so you can input another prompt. When RemixAI is underway, responding to a prompt, the blue play button turns into a red Stop button.

Recently I came across Remix Desktop. It’s very similar to Remix Online IDE but it’s a downloadable application. What caught my interest was its ability to build contracts without needing the internet. And beyond that, Remix Desktop includes a panel that accesses your computer’s native terminal, you can use many different types of wallets for deploying, and most importantly, you can use Foundry in Remix.

The Features of Remix Desktop

Remix Desktop is a version of Remix IDE that runs directly on your machine. Unlike the browser IDE, which requires internet access, Remix Desktop gives you:

• Offline capability

• Faster performance thanks to local system resources

• Local storage for your contracts

• A smooth environment for writing Solidity, Noir, Circom, and other smart contract languages

• A reliable setup for developers who work in areas with slow or unstable connections

• Native terminals on the go (bash, zsh, powershell , cmd.exe etc.)

• Multiple instances of Remix running at the same time

• Ability to work on your files in other editors at the same time (e.g. neovim, vim, vscode, cursor etc.)

• Remix Desktop is a wrapper of Remix IDE so Remix Desktop will automatically update to the latest version of Remix IDE whenever its published

With Remix Desktop, you can code anytime and anywhere, no browser, no lag, and no internet required for basic work.

To use Remix Desktop offline, first download the compilers you want in the Solidity Compiler plugin.

Then you can compile and deploy to the local Remix VM-simulated chain or to Anvil or the HardHat local test chains.

Native Terminal

As someone who loves the command line, the native terminal is one of the most compelling features of Remix Desktop that I use most of the time, if not all the time. It’s not just a simple add-on, it’s a fully integrated gateway to your machine’s shell, bringing the power of your entire development environment directly into the IDE.

Examples of How I Use the Remix Terminal

Seamless Git Operations:
Forget switching windows to manage your code. You can directly clone new or existing repositories, commit changes, and push your code to GitHub, all without leaving Remix.

Supercharging Foundry & Other Tools:
As I prefer Foundry for building my projects, the terminal lets you run any Foundry command that isn’t natively supported in Remix. For example, you can execute advanced Fuzz tests (forge test --match-test testFuzz), run Forge scripts for complex deployments, or use Cast to craft specific RPC calls directly from the Remix terminal in the same workspace.

Beyond Smart Contracts:
Remix Desktop also supports Typescript and Javascript. You can install dependencies, perform npm scripts (e.g. npm run dev etc.), or manage Docker containers via the terminal, all while keeping your code in the same window.

Using NeoVim and VSCode with Remix Desktop

Sometimes I don’t want to write code in the Remix editor. I prefer using the same editors I use for my other projects NeoVim or VSCode. The beauty of Remix Desktop is that I can do exactly that without compromising or vendor-blocking.

I just open my project folder in NeoVim or VSCode and start coding there. At the same time, I have Remix Desktop open on the same folder with Auto-Compile enabled. As I save changes in my editor, Remix automatically picks them up and recompiles. Then I switch to Remix Desktop just for deploying, testing, or using the debugger, or I use some other plugin like Solidity Analyzer (one of my favorite plugins which helps me to deeply analyse my contracts).

This workflow lets me stay in my comfort zone with my preferred editor setup (my LSP configurations, keybindings, themes, extensions) while still having access to Remix’s powerful deployment and debugging features. I get the best of both worlds without compromising on either side.

Using Remix Desktop with a Foundry Project

I’ve integrated Foundry into my Remix Desktop workflow, and it’s been incredibly powerful. Remix handles the visual side of things, and I use Foundry for what it does best : testing and advanced operations.

Remix can see when I compile in Foundry

When I compile a contract in Foundry, Remix Desktop automatically picks up the compilation artifacts from the out/ folder.

This means I can leverage Foundry’s compilation speed and testing framework while still using Remix’s deployment interface and debugger when I need them. It’s a great hybrid setup.

Remix + Foundry Workflow

Here’s how I use them together:

Property-Based Testing with Fuzzing

I typically run my fuzz tests with Foundry using forge test --match-test testFuzz in the terminal. The fuzzing capabilities in Foundry are unmatched, and being able to run them directly from Remix Desktop while viewing my contracts is seamless. I also use Foundry for gas optimization reports with forge test --gas-report, which helps me identify expensive operations quickly.

Remix doesn’t have built-in fuzzing capabilities. When I need to test edge cases or ensure my contract handles unexpected inputs, I switch to Foundry:

# Run fuzz tests with thousands of random inputs
forge test --match-test testFuzz -vvv

I write the fuzz tests in Remix, run them in the terminal, and if something breaks, I use Remix’s debugger to step through the exact transaction that failed.

The combination is incredibly powerful for catching bugs.

Gas Profiling and Snapshots

Remix shows you gas costs for individual transactions, but Foundry gives you the full picture:

# See gas costs across all functions

forge test --gas-report

# Create baseline to track optimization efforts

forge snapshot

I use this to compare gas costs before and after refactoring.

• Remix is where I write the code

• Foundry is where I verify that it’s actually more efficient

Testing Against Forked Mainnet

Remix can fork Mainnet or any other EVM chain in the Deploy & Run plugin:

If you don’t see the Remix VM Mainnet or Remix VM Custom Fork options, you’ll need to select the Customize this link which will open a tab of options in Remix’s Main Panel.

Nevertheless, I usually use Foundry for forking when I need to test how my contract interacts with existing Mainnet contracts (like Uniswap or Aave), and I run this command in the terminal:

# Fork mainnet at specific block
forge test --fork-url $MAINNET_RPC --fork-block-number 18000000

I test my contract against real protocol state without deploying anything. Then I use Remix to refine the contract and redeploy to my local Anvil instance.

Advanced On-Chain Queries with Cast

I use the Foundry cast command for its thorough reading of blockchain data.

# Get storage slot data
cast storage 0xAddress 0

# Decode transaction input

cast 4byte-decode 0xa9059cbb...

# Simulate a transaction before sending

cast call 0xContract “function()” --from 0xAddress

And I often use Cast to investigate how other contracts work, then implement similar patterns in Remix.

Continuous Testing Workflow

My typical workflow is:

• I write contracts in Remix (or NeoVim with Remix open)

• Save the file which triggers Foundry’s watch mode to automatically run my test suite:

forge test --watch

Every save triggers the tests. If they pass, I know my changes are safe. If they fail, I switch to Remix’s debugger to investigate. Foundry provides the automated testing workflow that Remix lacks, while Remix provides the visual debugging tools Foundry doesn’t have.

Deploying with Remix Desktop Using a Browser Wallet or Foundry

MetaMask through Remix is perfect for the development cycle :quick, visual, and immediate. Foundry scripts are for when you need precision, repeatability, and handling complex deployment logic. Having both in Remix Desktop means I can choose the right tool for the job without leaving my environment.

I use:

• Remix with Metamask for basic deployments; it’s quick, visual, and immediate.

• Foundry scripts run from a terminal in Remix for complex deployments that are repeated, that handle complex logic, or that go to multiple networks.

Basic Deployments with a Browser Wallet in Remix Desktop

Its surprising but true; you can use a browser wallet in Remix Desktop.

In Deploy and Run, choose Injected Provider in the Environment select box, a browser will open on a local URL (like http://localhost:49589/). With this browser, your browser wallet is accessible.

I use this method when:

• Deploying a single contract to a testnet

• Testing contract functions quickly

• Doing iterative development where I need immediate feedback

Advanced Deployments with Foundry Scripts

For production deployments or anything more complex, I switch to Foundry scripts. I can execute Forge script commands right from the Remix terminal to handle complex multi-contract deployments with precise control. And when I need to interact with previously deployed contracts or check on-chain data, I use cast commands like cast call or cast send without leaving my workspace. An example would be deploying a multi-contract system like a token with a vesting contract and an airdrop contract. With MetaMask, I’d have to deploy each contract manually, copy addresses, and pass them to the next contract. It’s tedious and error-prone.

Instead, I write a Foundry deployment script in Remix IDE:

Then, I run it from the Remix Desktop terminal with my RPC provider:

This deploys all three contracts, sets up their relationships, and even verifies them on Etherscan, all in one command. If something fails midway, Foundry’s resume feature lets me continue from where it stopped without redeploying everything.

I also use Foundry scripts for:

• Deployment with constructor arguments from external files: Reading configurations from JSON

• Conditional deployments: Checking if a contract already exists before deploying

• Post-deployment setup: Transferring ownership, setting up access control, funding contracts

• Multi-chain deployments: Using the same script across different networks with different RPC URLs

Remix Desktop has completely changed how I approach smart contract development

Remix Desktop is a development environment that adapts to how you already work.

The ability to code in my preferred editors like NeoVim or VSCode while Remix handles compilation and deployment means I never have to compromise. The native terminal brings the full power of my machine into the IDE, letting me run Git operations, manage dependencies, and execute Foundry commands without switching contexts or windows.

Speaking of Foundry, the integration is where things really shine. Remix provides the visual tools and intuitive deployment interface, while Foundry fills the gaps with advanced fuzzing, Mainnet forking, gas profiling, and continuous testing workflows. They complement each other perfectly.

Whether you’re working offline on a flight to a hackathon, dealing with unstable internet, or just want the flexibility to use your own tools without losing access to Remix’s powerful features, Remix Desktop delivers. It’s the development setup I wish I had when I first started writing smart contracts.

LearnEth is a tutorial platform right inside of Remix. The great thing about using LearnEth tutorials is that it’s embedded within Remix—all the development tools are right there! The Sandbox is set!

Adapt your current tutorials for use in LearnEth

Instructions in LearnEth are written in Markdown. There can be example files that load in the Editor. And, there can be test files to check a student’s work.

By default, LearnEth loads tutorials from the Remix Workshops repo.

Tutorial’s Structure in LearnEth

Tutorial chapters are organized in the config.yml file, and all the chapters are each placed in their own folder. Those folders contain Markdown files with instructions, example files, and test files.

After building your tutorial, make a PR to submit your tutorial to our Repo, and ping us for review.

LearnEth from your own repo

LearnEth can load tutorials from other repos as well. So, you can create your own repo that follows the LearnEth spec and then direct your users to load that repo.

To load another repo, click on the Import another tutorial repo, and open Select a repo.

If you make your own repo, you can direct your users to a URL that will open a tutorial from your repo in Remix.

With LearnEth you can get in-depth educational content to your community.

Access to Scripts for your Project

Have you tried automating Remix by running TS/JS scripts? We have a several different configurations of dependencies available for scripts to load.

When a TS/JS file is the active file in the Editor, you’ll get a button to run the script and a caret for more options. Clicking the caret will show the current choices.

If you click the Open script configuration option, the panel showing the dependencies available for each configuration will display.

Maximize Right Panel or Terminal

Remix packs a lot of features into its interface. The Left Side panel has been collapsable for quite some time (by clicking on the icon of the plugin currently in the side panel). Now, you can maximize the Right Side Panel or the Terminal.

So if you need more room to use the AI Assistant, click the maximize button here:

And you’ll get:

You could also bounce a Left Panel plugin to the right side and then maximize it. Check this view of the Deploy and Run Transactions plugin:

Fusaka Updates

In the Remix Static Analysis library, remix-analyzer, we have updated the gas threshold to 60M based on EIP-7935 which proposes a 60M default gas limit.

In the library that runs the Remix Debugger, remix-debug, we have added the CLZ opcode based on EIP-7939.

Git Clone Now in the Workspace Modal

We have added a new Clone Repo button. The old one is still under the GitHub login button on Remix’s Top Bar, but the new one is in the Workspace modal, which you can find by clicking here:

And then the New Workspace modal will come up, which contains the Git Clone button.

HardHat and Foundry Compilations Update

When connected to a Foundry or HardHat project folder in Remix Desktop (or with Remix Online using Remixd), you can check a box for triggering a compilation using either of those frameworks. This used to also trigger compilation in Remix but now, if that box is checked, compilation will only happen in the connected tool.

Remix VM Default EVM Version Is Now Osaka

The latest EVM upgrade occurred last week bringing in the Osaka. We’ve updated Remix to default to this latest version. The EVM version is selected in the Solidity Compiler in the Advanced Configurations section.

If you are feeling old fashioned, you can select a previous version.

Toasters Now Appear in the Upper Right

Toasters are single notifications that usually come up from the bottom of the screen - like a piece of toast. Notifications tend to come on the upper right of the screen and can be stacked up. We are changing our Toaster notifications to become Notifications.

The new Toaster…I mean Notification, does not stay onscreen for long and its color does not stand out from the rest of the screen - which won’t be a problem for those possessing sensitive peripheral vision. For the rest of us, help will come in the next release.

Easier Verification with Etherscan

In the last release, we added the option to Deploy & Verify in the Deploy & Run Transactions plugin. To Verify on Etherscan, you had to add your Etherscan API key in the Connected Services section of the Settings panel. In this release, you can still add your Etherscan API key there, but you can also add it to the Settings tab of the Contract Verification plugin.

Improved Autocompletion for TS/JS Files

We’ve added a dynamic type acquisition system to significantly improve autocompletion in TypeScript and JavaScript files.

Previously, the editor relied on static, bundled type definitions (web-types.ts), which could contain outdated information. Now, when a user imports an NPM package like:

import { createPublicClient } from ‘viem’

Remix automatically fetches the corresponding type definitions and their dependencies from the jsdelivr CDN. These types are then injected into the editor, which will deliver better autocompletion for a wider range of libraries.

A New Button in the File Explorer Replaces All the Icons

Previously in the File Explorer, there were six icons for creating and importing files and folders. In this release, there is now a large Create button, which opens a menu with the specific options.

Buttons for Collapsing Panels

In Remix, you could always collapse a panel if it was in the way. With this release, we’ve made it easier to open and close panels. The buttons are next to the Workspace select box (which in the image below is named Simple EIP 7702 - 2):

You can collapse the Right Panel, the Left Panel, or the Terminal.

Running your own LLM on a different machine?

Concerned about privacy when using an LLM? Then use Ollama, the LLM runner. Ollama was integrated into Remix a few releases back. Here are the docs about how to run it in Remix. If you’re also concerned about disk space, you can run a private LLM on another machine or in the cloud and have Ollama connect to that machine’s URL. Just input the URL into Remix’s Settings panel. Here’s how:

Open the panel by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of Remix. Then click on the RemixAI Assistant section and you’ll see the text field under the Ollama URL Configuration header. It could be helpful to collapse the right panel, and the Terminal, with the new Collapse Panel buttons.

RemixAI Accepts Audio Input

Are your fingers sore, broken, or fatigued? Or, do you just have your hands full with lunch? You can now vibe code in Remix by voice with the audio input button.

OpenZeppelin Wizard Integration & Template Selection Update

Now when you create a new Workspace, you can use our integration of the OpenZeppelin Wizard to generate a Workspace. Or, you can describe the files you’d like in a Workspace and RemixAI will make it for you.

The other Workspace Templates are still available, like Noir, Circom, or Gnosis Safe to name a few. Just scroll down to find them.
