Ultimately from Old Japanese. Cognate with (omote).[1] Derived as a compound of (omo, face) +‎ (te, hand; direction, side), basically meaning "face-wards; facing side".[2][3][4][5][6]

The term omote in general is attested since the Nihon Shoki of 720.[4] The spelling for this word is attested from roughly 1000.[1]

Cognate with Okinawan (umuti).
