Univerbation of haut (“today”) +‎ des (archaic genitive article) +‎ Dag (“day”) +‎ -s (archaic genitive suffix), thus literally “today of the day”. Compare German heutzutage, Dutch vandaag de dag, English nowadays, French au jour d’aujourd’hui.
