🔍 Sessions spotlight: Powering electrification at #CEESummit2026   Gerben Hieminga (Senior Economist, ING Nederland ) brought the same sharp question to two stages: if we want a different outcome for Europe's energy system, do we change the players, or the rules of the game?   On the main stage, he argued that systems move through distinct phases no policy can skip - tensions between politicians, businesses and individuals all surface at once. His challenge: for genuinely unviable business cases, companies need to take real responsibility, or stop. On the Electrification & Energy Transition stage, he took that question into the energy system itself. Electrification is already happening across transport, heating and industry - but scaling it up means changing the system around it too: power prices, investment incentives, grid infrastructure, security of supply, and grid congestion. When businesses wait years for a connection, investment decisions shift - and the transition ends up slowed by the very infrastructure meant to enable it. The takeaway: technology creates the opportunity. Policy and system design decide how far it goes. Yesterday at the AFME European Compliance & Legal Conference, one theme seemed to run through almost every discussion, regardless of whether the focus was regulation, governance, risk management or data: AI. It is no longer an emerging topic. It is already firmly embedded in the challenges, opportunities and decisions facing Compliance and Legal functions today. I also had the opportunity to participate in panel discussion, Data: The Role of Legal and Compliance Functions. Working across smaller locations in the CEE region, I am constantly reminded that good governance is not what is written in a policy or framework. It is what people do in practice, what responsibilities are clearly owned, and what can be evidenced when questions are asked. A few thoughts I took away from both the conference and the panel: - There must be clear owner of company data, the process and sustainable remediation. - Centralisation can improve efficiency, but it does not remove local accountability. - Being close to day-to-day operations helps identify issues early, but it should not blur ownership or accountability. - AI governance can only be as strong as the data governance beneath it. - Reliable evidence matters more than ambitious claims. The German Business Breakfast, hosted with ING Česká republika and AHK Tschechien / Česko-německá obchodní a průmyslová komora, brought together senior representatives from companies that form the backbone of the Czech-German economic relationship. Insightful contributions came from Christian Rühmkorf on energy and industry pulse check among German corporates in Czechia, Carsten Brzeski on Germany's outlook and Europe's competitiveness, and David Havrlant on what it means for growth, trade and investment.
