The National Rugby League (NRL) celebrates Indigenous Round 2026 across Rounds 23-24 of the Telstra Premiership and Rounds 6-7 of the Telstra Women’s Premiership. Indigenous Round recognises and celebrates the enduring contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Rugby League, recognising the stories, achievements and communities that continue to shape our game. Rugby League is proudly the sport of choice of Indigenous Australians with one in five (20%) of all grassroots Rugby League participants nationally identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.   Indigenous participation in Rugby League is more than five times (5x) higher than population representation in Australia (3.8%) and Rugby League has the highest publicly reported Indigenous grassroots participation rate of any major sporting code in Australia.   At the elite level, the NRL continues to lead the way for Indigenous representation with 12% of contracted NRL players and 11% of NRLW players identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today joined his counterparts from Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tonga in Brisbane to launch the Pacific Rugby League Partnership. The partnership will strengthen our ties through sport and create education, leadership and employment opportunities. Australia’s commitment of $250 million over 10 years will also create pathways for emerging talent across the Pacific. Early initiatives of the partnership include: • expanding youth engagement and violence prevention programs in the region to reach more communities • identifying opportunities for NRL and NRLW matches to be played in the Pacific. The partnership will be delivered by the Australian Rugby League Commission collaboration with the national rugby league federations of Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. Prime Minister Albanese described it as “bringing our Pacific family closer together” through one of Australia’s favourite sporting codes.

The Rugby League community has once again shown its extraordinary generosity in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation, with the 2026 NRL Beanie for Brain Cancer Round raising $3.8 million in the fight against brain cancer. It brings the total funds raised from the round to $33.5 million since its inception in 2017. https://lnkd.in/geJiq9pd

The National Rugby League (NRL) and Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) joined forces at Rugby League Central today to kick off the 10th anniversary Beanie for Brain Cancer Round across Round 17 of the 2026 Telstra Premiership.   Rugby League fans have so far helped MHF raise $29.7 million through the sale of more than 1.3 million beanies in the first 9 years, bringing Australians together in the fight against brain cancer. https://lnkd.in/gBz2tUyj
