The past 2 days have been hectic, my VPS got received: "unplanned-planned maintenance by a third party" (nicest way to say someone from my past SSHed into my server and deleted the bootloader and some files for my VPS), but everything has been 100% restored and were back! ( including a full private key rotation )
Back to the brighter side: I started working on a Celeste(Pico-8) Demake for UXN, Writing a nice feeling character controller for a platformer is so much harder then I remembered it being. I just hope I don't loss motivation like the rest of my projects in a ~week
VPS blew up :3
I spent the whole day with friends and had a great time! But my mental health wasen't the greatest once I returned to the comfort of my own home due to unrelated circumstances, so no proper adventuring today... so sorry for that :(
On a completely different tangent, but I felt I should still include it in my update: I have been playing Yume 2kki recently to distract myself from all worries and anxiety I've been holding for the few weeks. I've never seen a community project come together to create one cohesive peice of art like this before and it amazes me every time I boot it up. It also has a soundtrack filled with absolute bangers you should check out!
D6 recently released uxn-lfb, a framebuffer uxn implimentation. I thought it be cool to have it on my Kobo E-Reader and i ported it quite easily! This was all made possible by the amazing fbink library, it makes e-ink programing so much easier! If you have a Kobo device you can download and use my fork
In no relation to anything I was doing before, I have setup a copyparty instance at files.angelwood.xyz! I can't belive how simple and easy it was to setup it up, and all my devices are just working perfectly! ( Even my 3ds can upload files to it somehow :0 ) I have a bunch of documents, guides, and other files that you might find interesting, look around!
And finally I found a old license key for RPG maker 2003 that I inherited from my dad, I am learning the engine and I might try to make a little game in it!
I finished 2 smol uxn-related projects this morning and I'm proud of how both came out ^_^
For all you kakoune users I have a treat for you, I implimented uxntal syntax as highlighters! There was a few pre-existing uxntal implimentations for kakoune but I felt they were either over complicated or were not fully complient. You can download the current config from my dotfiles repo here
Another uxn project I have finished nds-bundler, It can take any .rom and compile it into a standalone .nds file! The best part is you don't even need a full SDK installed to use it, only ndstool is required to assemble all the peices together. The game icon and picture are also sourced from the rom so it needs no manual intervention! You can find it on my personal fork of uxnds (Thank you asie for the base implimentation)
We lost power lastnight and when the homelab tried to turn on everything came crashing down, so I spent many hours trying to fix that.
The core of the issue was the VM running my DHCP server was not connecting to the network as it could not get an IP from a DHCP server..... I promise I am not stupid - but I can't believe my network was working for months with this living Catch-22 living inside of it. Everything is fixed now and upgraded to the latest versions of their respective software!
I also don't think this week is the right week for working on my Lisp. I think trying to force myself to work on this kind of project will make me resent it in the future, it must be developed organically on random afternoons with little to no planing beforehand :)
I have plans for somethings to do tommorow, but If you can see from my trackrecord, I can never promise anything during a December Adventure.
Hello Hello! If snow is still on the ground then we can still adventure! I have been deliberating on whether or not I should join in on the march adventure, and I think I will!
I've been playing around with implimenting my own lisp and I'm getting some ideas for a larger S-Expression based project. For this week I might try to write a small S-Expression based language that targets either UXN or QBE. It wouldnt be a lisp persay - but the compiler would be able to run a lisp at runtime to do metaprogramming stuff!
I just want to say thank you for reading my Log for this Year of my december adventure, I also want to give some praise to all the amazing people I got to see create because of this, make sure to checkout what they did!
Your getting a 2 in one deal here! Firstly the progress on the isometric game is going great! Transitions between worlds are working like a charm and the map format is almost finalized! The next steps are a the camera subsystem, and adding sokoban-like moveable tiles. I hope to get a short tiny demo of the engines features done by newyear!
Secondly, the Toki Pona Translations i was working on earlier this month got a semi-large update and finally coming to a state I'm of! Some of the rebble developers are talking about embedding it into the official DB!!! which is quite exciting!
Downloads are available on my Sourcehut CI
More progress on the game so far! Isometric rendering is working perfectly! I also drew a little cat as the main charicter, will write a longer update tommorow once i get more progress done!
I was stuck in a labrinth - Wide hallways that felt like they were going on forever. From grates in the ceiling i could see the moon above, the Sigil in the centre of the moon caught my full attention, it felt directed to me personally in some strange way. I kept walking and I saw everything besides any fellow life. I saw terminals still logged in, journals with letters half drawn. It didnt look like anybody left in a rush, it just looked like everything was perfectly perserved in place. As I continue to walk I find a large window set into the side of a wall. The sun is setting, almost fully eclipsed by the moon at this point. The sigil in the moon looks like its somehow being lit from behind and glows.
I woke up from that dream as soon as I saw the sigil glow. I can't get what i saw out of my head so I will try making a videogame out of what I saw. As i am writing this i hope to lucid dream and reenter the labrinth to explore it more.
It was xmas! I was too busy baking pies to do any creative/programming work. I did get a tiny bit of time in to tinker with 9front a little bit more! I am getting more comfortable using it and its just really nice to use :3
My 3D printer has been broken for a few months, but the part required to repair it was just delivered in the mail! Took me a while to set up klipper with a new updated config, but after a few more hours of calibration I should have a fully functional machine by tommorow! ( The belts are over tighened, Pressure advance is all wonky and their is no resonence tuning )
There is this calculator that ive had for god knows how long, The Sharp EL-W516 produced in the early 2000's. I have a strange attachment to this calculator mainly due to the muscle memory I've developed using it. Earlier today it just decided to not turn on at all :( After alot of tinkering I swapped out capasitor and it woke again from its slumber, defeated death itself!
I am drafting my little year's end blogpost! I am looking at the progress I've made this year and I don't even know where to start. I am hoping to just write a little thankyou letter to all hte people/communities that were a amazing part of my year!
I have had the domain wylm.sh for quite a while, but never what knew what to put on it. For a while it was a internet radio station, then a pubnix/tilde me and my ex ran, and a few other things over the past ~2 years. I decided to see how hard it would be to run a snac instance on OpenBSD as a way to learn a little bit more about both. I followed this guide on ircnow and it all went without a hassle! OpenBSD might be my favorite BSD, ive used it for a few years when I need something i can reliably leave unattended for months at a time without worrying about it.
I expect that in 3 months i will have another idea for what to do with wylm and i will take down the snac instance, if anybody has an idea what the domain wylm.sh should be I would love to hear it!
No adventuring today, just practised the mandolin a bit and slept ~10 hours.
The MPD client is nearly at the point of where I want it! I have this bad habbit of spending so much time choosing my music, so i made a client that made it impossible to choose your own music :p Premade playlists can now be loaded into the queue and swapped out! I also got it to play nice with my pebble watch, so we have a watch running uxn communicated to a mpd server communicating to uxn, convoluted but works shockingly well! I had my last day of work/schooling today aswell, so I am free until Jan ~7-ish. Im somehow full of energy thinking of all the things I can do with all this freetime, but also so tired with all the stuff I had in the first half of this month.
I got some work done today on marmalade, got a list of playlist showing! I had so much work today, had to run high-voltage lines and repaired some lights at one of the theatres. Tommorow is my last day of work so I will soon be free. I also got my old typewriter working again so I might send a letter to a friend of mine who's in newfoundland!
Someone I used to know got me onto using MPD as my primary music player. It has a Client<->Server architecture, so any client can connect to the mpd server and control the music without having to deal with all the complexities of it. Most of the time i use rmpc as my primary client, but i decided to see if i could write one in UXN! MPD comes with a super simple cli tool called mpc, my client marmalade uses it to communicate to the server without hassle. You can try out my client here!, but I will be working on it for a few days so its not ready to be used, please be patient <3
I was watching ben eaters 6502 computer series and he talking about porting wozmon to his computer. I got a little inspired and wrote a wozmon-like monitor for uxn! it fits into less then one page of memory(0x100 bytes) and will work on muxn100 machine or better! It does not have the exact same syntax but it is enought to be able to bootstrap a basic system from! you can find the monitor here!

It was so cold, I curled up into myself as a ball in my bed, I got warm
Went to a robotics compeitition up north, the 2 teams we sent didnt do amazingly the first day, but tommorow we hope to do much better! I wont be going to see in person tommorow, but im confident the kids will beable to handle themselves without me around :) On the walk back to my house from the bus-station there is a trail of snowangels I left behind, i just couldnt hold myself back.
I decided to do all the yearly-cleanup things that I have been pracastinating over the past weeks. My 2 VPS's and my homelab are now on the latest feature/security patches and the migration was quite smooth. As I am writing this ZFS is currently rebuilding into a new configuration that should be able to support 2 complete disk failures, and I setup automated backups to a remote location as insurance (a laptop running in the basements of a friends house with a external SSD).
On some weirder news, My laptop fixed itself????? I was cleaning the inside from all the dust and when i reassembled it all the issues ive had with it just disapeared! THe major issue was that the uefi frame buffer has broken Colours (RGB was swapped with GRB). I have no idea what caused it to fix itself, but I am so happy it did as now PXE boot works properly again! All i can say from this is that Computers are a tiny bit magic and we will never 100% understand how they work, even if we are the ones to create them. You can read in more detail about the insanity here on fedi!
Tommorow will not have alot of work done due to me having to go to another robotics tournament 200km away 0-0
I was running a robotics compeitition for the kids im teaching/coaching! We got 2nd... again :( But our 4 teams did so much better than last time! I spent most of the day covered in graphite, welding, and making sure only decent music was being played over the sound system. I did make the mistake of not covering my skin properly while welding so I have a tanline that looks like a peice of modern art on my shoulder :p I am so sleepy after all of that.....
I only have enought energy to crochet and make tea, but thats all you need.
I picked working on my uxn rpg engine! At the momment i am still hoping to make a working oneshot demake.... eventually! The core of the engine is almost complete, i still need to impliment a dialogue tree based on tokia and a map editor. The map editor part is what I am focusing on first! The way the maps are stored in memory makes it quite memory efficient, but tricky to insert new tiles at runtime, so ill have to do some shananigans.
I have been planing on doing this map-editor work for a while, but i got so busy teaching, my education, and my lack of energy that I had to take a step back from the rpg project. On the brighter side in about 2-ish weeks I will be on break so i have all the time to relax & work on this project!
The beginning of this month has been quite chaotic and it has taken a quite its toll on my mental/physical health. All the manual labour i have been doing is is making my knee flare up, and sometimes walking is difficult. Ive also felt quite lonely due to having to breakup with someone a few months ago after a toxic relationship. Atleast this december adventure is helping me distract myself from all that :3
I cuddled me cat, I watched shitty movies and hung out with friends, and I worked on the super duper secret project! Hopefully in a few days it will be at a state where i can be proud to present it
I have not much to show for today, but I can promise in a few days ill have something to show to the world! I can assure you that :3
I finally am in a clearer mind and I feel well enought to work again!! I was optimizing the algorithm in noelle too give more realistic crystals. I was also playing around with heol and fennel. Lisp-like languages are such a strange, yet beautiful way of programming, I might spend more time with them to see if i real love them. I am also looking at obsidian alternatives for note taking, zim is looking quite appealing at the momment, but if I could find something with kakoune intergration that would amazing! (Or maybe i could write zim<->kakoune intergrations?). I have also worked on webpage and reorganized it a bit!
More on a side note, but i finished setting up my ko-fi, a few people in the past have asked if they could donate and i finally had the chance to fix a strange bank issue!
My mental health is really taking its toll on me today :( come back tommorow, ill hopefully be better by then!
Late lastnight i got nerdsniped by a article talking about how ice crystal growth can be simulated with brownian motion! So i spend the late hours of the night and a hour this morning to make a little snowflake generator in love2d!. It also has a "live-mode" so you can see the crystal being grown realtime! You can watch a video of it growing in real time on my fedi account
EDIT: Turns out it was not an article, but a video with a article appended at the end! Find the video here!
With the power of sleeping 10 hours and a cat on my lap ive recovered a little bit from yesturday! A cursed idea was planted in my brain a few weeks ago and finally implmented it. A Varvara implimentation that does not use uxn at all! It is a WASM core that is only given a dei or a deo function and nothing else. Is it useless, Yes :3, was it also quite fun to figure out to write raw web assembly code & a custom interpreter.
Find it here
Something looks so familer, and yet so different
I have been vomiting all morning and have had a few coughing fits :( Seems this journey might have a few pitstops & places to rest, but thats all part of the adventure right! I will spend the rest of the day drinking tea, working on my ship in a bottle, and working on a secret long-form written article (Might be released in early-ish 2026), programming is quite hard while sick :/
I got my pebble watch a few days ago and I cannot stop playing around with it. I have been working on packaging toki pona as a language pack that can run on the watch! Next steps are to hopefully dynamically create sitelen Lakin and sitlen pona versions. I might work on some of my projects on my "procastination board" for the rest of the december adventure
