We've spent eleven years building for them. Behind the counter. On the floor. Watching what broke. Building the fix. And we're just getting started. We're entering one of the most exciting chapters in Yoco's history, with the most advanced commerce capabilities for independent businesses in the market and a mission that has never felt more urgent. Give independent businesses the tools to compete with the big guys. To do that at scale, we need people in the field. Across South Africa. Every day. If you can find, open, and close and you're based in Johannesburg, Pretoria, KZN, or the Western Cape, we'd love to chat. You'll get some of the best foundational sales training in the market, leaders worth learning from, real room to grow, and a mission you can feel proud of every day you're in the field. Charles Niehaus a publié ceciBrain teaser for the day – and I’m hoping someone in my network can point me to a report or analyses on where the South African banking & fintech industry is going (or perhaps some sort of scenario exercise that’s been done), my intrigue is pretty straight forward: - SA has an adult population of around 45m people (above 15 years old), economically active (19-65) is around 41m – so that’s arguably the “profitable” bankable population - There are reputed to be around 1m SME’s - And then the corporates would make up the balance - So let’s assume these days the “profitable” accounts are roughly around 43m give or take (for primary accounts) The rough numbers from various publications on bank accounts seem to be as follows (so this is probably about 90% correct): - Capitec 24m, Standard Bank 11.9m, Absa 10m, Tyme 10m, FNB 9.7m, Nedbank 7m, African Bank 5.4m, Discovery 2.5m - so total of these before the other/smaller/niche banks is around 80m accounts (What isn’t always clear is how many of these reported numbers are primary/transactional accounts vs lending and others). - That is before OM gets going, before Lesaka does something with their Bank Zero acquisition, along with the continued growth of the incumbents - Then add in the mobile wallet plays from the MNO’s, along with all the Fintech’s making various consumer and SME plays So I’m sitting here wondering: Assuming every bankable person/entity already has roughly two accounts (80m/41m), new players are launching and existing players are still growing: 1) Who is still unbanked? 2) Where is this all going? Can it continue like this or are we starting to stare down the road of a consolidation of the industry again like we did in 2001/2002, and is the Lesaka/Bank Zero deal the first signal of the Fintech industry consolidation?

While this seems to be changing, we’ve always felt that anyone should have the opportunity to invest in great teams and benefit from a company’s upside - anyone should have been able to invest in early SpaceX! During our previous fundraise, we decided to do things a little differently. Last year, we worked with Republic to set up a campaign that allowed anyone to invest as little as 250 USD into our company with something as familiar as a credit card. This year is no different. For the next 15 days only, we are opening up our fundraise to the general public and allowing people to become shareholders in our company. But by last week only 21k of us living abroad had registered! 1% of the 2 million South Africans living abroad 😥 Surely more than 1% of us care - our families, our friends, and our country need us So don't procrastinate, let's get this done - it takes 5 minutes to register Tips: 1) Take a photo of docs and then upload them rather than taking photos during the process 2) I struggled with uploading the passport photo so ticked the box and am taking both docs to South Africa House on election day 3) Be resilient - hopefully, you're lucky but at worst it takes a few attempts Please then: -register, -like -share None of us want to regret not registering - people died for this So let's get this viral and each commit to getting 5 fellow "Saffas" over the line - hassle them daily, - promise them a coffee/beer/glass of wine once they've registered - threaten to take away their Springbok jersey if they don't... - whatever it takes And let's all make a difference https://lnkd.in/ds5vpNYi #elections2024 #southafrica #southafrican BizNews Alec Hogg Stuart Lowman Democratic Alliance Democratic Alliance Abroad ActionSA Hayley Rebecca Reichert Bob Skinstad

Charles Niehaus a partagé ceciCharles Niehaus a partagé ceciThere’s been an increasing number of people reaching out wanting to join us on our journey of improving healthcare in #Africa, so we thought we’d shake things up a bit and carry out an experiment of sorts. I also think this is useful to other founders raising capital... ...Read on, grasshopper! We recently closed our Pre-A with some great partners in the lead (shout-out to health54, CFAO, Boost VC... We love you ppl!), but one thing we realized along the #fundraising journey is that investing is typically reserved for structured VC firms and funds. In other words, folks like you and me typically watch the show from the sidelines and don’t have the opportunity to participate in a company’s future or benefit from any potential upside. Aside from this, the current set-up has the effect of monopolizing investing in the hands of a relative few and can lead to behaviour I described in a previous post (FYI: all startups are competing for the same money from a small pool of #VCs…. Not exactly a balanced power dynamic, now is it!) The people approaching us wanting to participate aren’t people with hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest, but individuals that want to participate in the company’s future with whatever money they have. So, we asked ourselves…. Why the heck not?! We set up a Republic campaign for just this reason. I would encourage early-stage #founders looking to raise capital for their ventures to look at reputable platforms like Republic. Here’s why: -> Some platforms go through a valuable DD process which is helpful for you as a founder and brings confidence to would-be investors. -> Connects you with millions of small-scale investors and opportunities to showcase the cool things you're building… for free! -> Investing is SUPER easy. People can set up a profile and invest with a credit card within minutes. -> Small investment minimum (100 USD) means more people can participate and fund you! -> Uses boilerplate, NVCA legal instruments that are industry standard that won’t have anything sneaky lurking within. Trust me, vanilla is your friend. -> No special rights are granted such as voting, information, inspection, pro-rata, etc., which means you’re not spending your valuable time fielding questions from potentially thousands of investors (focus on building!). -> No side letters. -> It levels the playing field by opening up capital opportunities to startups that may otherwise have brilliant ideas and companies die. ->You get to meet great people and make valuable connections across the globe. So for those of you that reached out wanting to join us, here’s our Republic campaign below. A few things to keep in mind, though. We are NOT raising $1.25M. With the offline commitments we have, there is only 50K remaining before we pull the plug. Invest, share, learn, and DM me if you need an intro to Republic. Always happy to help. __ #startup #startupfounders #healthcare #investors https://republic.com/tibu

Charles Niehaus a aimé ceciCharles Niehaus a aimé ceciPeople looove to hate London But sometimes I'm reminded what a really, truly special place it is - and it deserves a bit of love! Before London, I was in New York, and for a long time I thought it was "New York or nowhere". A city with unmatched energy, pace, ambition, and momentum. It is true that there is no place like New York City - and it will always be my home. But what I’ve come to love about London is that it offers a completely different kind of magic. It feels less like one city and more like a collection of villages that have slowly grown together over hundreds of years. Even after more than six years here, I’m still discovering new corners of it. I turn down a street I’ve never seen before and find something so curious and random. Did you know that London has the most music venues of any city in the world? More artist studios per capita? Over 300 languages, 192+ museums, 800 bookshops, and 8+ million trees! There is so, so much creativity everywhere. Like New York, London is a place people move to because they believe more is possible. It has that pull. And you can feel it! I love how multi-cultural and interesting it is. I'm not immune to hating London. The weather can be grim. It can feel grey. It can feel short on nature. I spend four months in Cape Town and forget London exists. But every once in a while, I get pulled back into that feeling of wandering through the city and finding something unexpectedly beautiful. And it makes me feel very lucky to live here. So I'm just sharing a few of these moments here, in case anyone else is feeling a bit down on London and needs a reminder that it's not that grim and spring is coming! Are there any other London appreciaters out there?!

Together, we’re protecting thousands of merchants across industries - and more than 6 million customers - against the escalating threat of digital payment fraud. For over a decade, Ozow has been a pioneer in account-to-account payments. They’ve taken that same pioneering spirit into new rails such as Capitec Pay, Payshap and most recently card. By integrating Orca Fraud's AI-driven fraud orchestration platform across all payment methods and channels, Ozow can monitor, detect and respond to threats in real time, ensuring a consistent layer of protection no matter how customers choose to pay. When we first met their team, we were blown away by how humble and engaged they were in the work we were doing. We have since shared many a Nando's meal together and really got to know them over Boujee bowls and peri-peri chicken. There’s a real sense of excitement across the board about what we’re building: Abongile, Karen, Athenkosi and Leigh have become incredible superusers of our platform - constantly reminding us that our mission is to empower fraud and data analysts like them to fight fraud at scale. David squared (David Willis and David M.) and Richmond have been a world-class engineering team to work with and they smashed through our integration even with their impressive scale. From day one, it felt like we were an extension of their engineering team. And then on the business side, Riaan, Lyle, Adam and Rachel have been equally amazing. Their clear love for their merchants and products have ensured we look at fraud not only as a preventative measure, but also as a growth enabler. We are so incredibly proud to be working with them and it's such a highlight of my week, getting to see Abongile and Carla work closely together to dive deep in the data and rules. This partnership isn’t just about stopping fraud - it’s about building trust and enabling growth across South Africa’s digital payment ecosystem. Onwards and orcwards!

South Africa’s payments landscape is entering an important new chapter. The proposed National Payment System Bill could significantly reshape how fintechs, payment companies and digital financial platforms operate in South Africa. For me, this is more than a regulatory development it is a signal of where our financial ecosystem is heading. Greater Reserve Bank oversight across areas such as digital wallets, remittances and payment initiation could create a more structured and trusted environment for innovation, while also raising the bar for compliance, governance and consumer protection. For fintechs like eJuuZ, building for the future means getting the balance right: innovation, financial inclusion, security and regulatory alignment. The opportunity is particularly exciting when we consider the millions of South Africans who still interact with the economy primarily through cash and informal channels. The next generation of payment infrastructure must not only be digital, it must be accessible, trusted and relevant to the communities it serves. I’m looking forward to seeing how this Bill develops and what it ultimately means for South Africa’s fintech ecosystem. The future of payments is being shaped now. 🇿🇦 #Fintech #SouthAfrica #Payments #FinancialInclusion #DigitalPayments #eJuuZ #Innovation

End of an era for South African banking giant backed by billionaire Patrice Motsepe! TymeBank, the digital bank that has quickly grown to over 10 million customers, is set to rebrand as it undergoes a series of changes. After a soft launch in 2018, TymeBank has quickly grown to become one of South Africa’s most well-known brands. Like other digital banks, it does not feature a branch network and instead relies on its digital app and its retail partners, Pick n Pay and the Foschini Group. The group became profitable for the first time in late 2023, ahead of expectations, becoming the first digital bank in the country to do so. It has continued to show remarkable growth, often claiming the title of fastest-growing digital bank in the country. The bank has also grown to international markets, with the broader Tyme Group offering services in Vietnam and the Philippines. By the end of 2024, the bank was valued at $1.5 billion (R26 billion) after raising capital from existing and new investors. As reported by News24, the South African TymeBank is set to follow a similar branding as the Filipino GoTymeBank and change its name to GoTyme in the first half of 2026. TymeBank said that it is evolving its brand to reflect its growth, maturity and focus on customers across a wider economic spectrum. The move still requires internal and regulatory processes, with further details being shared closer to the launch. The title is giving "click bait". But great developments. Go TymeBank 👏! https://lnkd.in/dMcafVcA

The contribution that BNPL is making towards financial inclusion is growing, and South Africa is not the only country where there is traction. I’d like to share this very informative article by PYMNTS Intelligence, which gives an important global perspective ✅ Critically the global trend is that 98% of BNPL users manage their payments responsibly – it reflects what we see in our PayJustNow BNPL business as well. That’s disciplined credit use. ✅ Even more interesting? Many lower- and middle-income households in the USA are using BNPL to smooth out cash flow, not splurge. For nearly half of these users, BNPL was the difference between making a necessary purchase, or going without. In South Africa, we see similar patterns: BNPL isn’t replacing traditional credit - it’s filling the gaps where credit has historically failed to reach. https://lnkd.in/d84PNBNP #BNPL #Fintech #FinancialInclusion #DigitalPayments #SouthAfrica

Innovation without trust won't scale, but regulation without flexibility stifles growth. South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Governor Lesetja Kganyago has outlined how the upcoming National Payment Systems Bill will reshape SA's payments landscape. Among the highlights include a shift to activity-based regulation, so fintechs and banks doing the same work will be subjected to the same rules; non-banks will be able to participate directly in clearing and settlement; and PayInc's role as a national payment utility will make digital payments faster, safer, and cheaper.
