Common Types of Magic & Where To Find Them in Pop Culture

Magic comes in many forms, from the fiery depths of the earth to the silent depths of the human mind. Every soul resonates with a different mystical frequency, and we're here to provide an overview of the common types of magic and which fictional worlds you might recognize them from.


Elemental Magic
Elemental magic is a type of magic that controls and manipulates the earth’s elements, including fire, earth, water, and air. Its wielders can harness these powerful elements and use them for any desired purpose. Often, this also includes the elements in different forms, like ice, mud, or even electricity. For example, in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang becomes a master of bending all four elements. In Percy Jackson, Percy also uses elemental magic to control and manipulate water.


Light Magic
Light magic is a type of celestial magic that draws power from the stars and the sun, as well as other parts of the heavenly cosmos. It’s most commonly used for healing, divination, and creation, but it can also be used to blind enemies or forge light shields for defense. For example, in The Legend of Zelda, Princess Zelda uses holy light magic to create weapons, trap monsters, and heal wounds.


Mind Magic
Mind magic—sometimes called mental or psychic magic—relies on the supernatural workings of the brain. It can encompass various mental abilities, including superhuman intelligence, telepathy, telekinesis, mind-reading, and emotional control. For example, in the X-Men franchise, Charles Xavier possesses psychic magic, and he’s able to telepathically communicate and control the minds of others.


Shadow Magic
Shadow magic refers to using shadows, darkness, and everything they encompass for magical means. It’s also related to dark magic, which is relatively sinister and can involve hexes, curses, rituals, and demon-summoning. However, shadow magic is not necessarily evil. In fact, it’s often used for stealth, subterfuge, and the guarding of precious secrets. For example, the character Raven from DC Comics can magically project her shadow in order to fly and cast spells.


Bestial Magic
Bestial magic involves any capabilities that allow a person to speak to, control, and bond deeply with animals. Sometimes, bestial magicians can even take on animalistic aspects (e.g., a bird’s wings or a bear’s claws) or even completely transform into a certain animal. For example, in the Harry Potter series, all four of the Marauders can transform into animals. Remus turns into a wolf, James Potter into a stag, Sirius Black into a dog, and Peter Pettigrew into a rat.


Technology Magic
Technology magic—often called magitcech or technomancy—blends the world of magic with the world of tech. This type of magic allows wielders to manipulate technology, but it can also be used to replicate technological systems or speed them along. For example, in DC Comics, the character of Cyborg (or Victor Stone) can link his brain directly into global computers and use his mind to hack and control machines.
