Wind power’s role in U.S. energy market
Electricity generation from wind in the United States reached a peak of over 453 terawatt hours in 2024, with figures having grown steadily since the early 2000s. In 2023, wind power production in the country registered a slight decrease, amounting to some 421 terawatt hours. Following China, the U.S. ranked as the
second leading country in newly installed wind power. That year, the United States added about four gigawatts to its wind farm fleets, roughly the same amount as Germany. Texas was by far the
U.S. state with the greatest new capacity installations, followed by Oklahoma and Wyoming. Regarding wind companies, GE Vernova is the largest U.S.-based wind turbine manufacturer. In 2024, the company generated a revenue of 9.7 billion U.S. dollars through its
wind energy business segment.
Offshore’s rocky start and future prospects
Despite having a huge resource potential, the U.S. coast has been largely untapped for offshore wind deployment. As of May of 2024, the country with a coastline of over 12,000 miles had only 174 megawatts of
offshore wind capacity installed. As of that time, there were also roughly 80 gigawatts of offshore projects in the country's
offshore pipeline, with over four megawatts already under construction. However, the current Trump administration has implemented several actions targeting offshore wind projects, including withdrawals from offshore leasing, reviews of active projects, stop-work orders, and cancellation of grants. These measures represent a shift from prior support for offshore wind and are keeping the industry almost entirely on hold.
U.S. wind energy outlook
Although to a lesser extent than offshore wind, onshore wind energy is also experiencing a slowdown in the United States. Policies impacting land-based wind project developments such as permitting freezes have resulted in severe disruption and uncertainty, as well as widespread project cancellations and delays. Although wind continues to be the largest renewable energy source in the U.S., new installations are forecast to slow down in the near future, along with investment and employment in the sector.
