From the course: Using Gender Inclusive Language
Inclusive workplaces begin with language
- Language is powerful. Words are the foundation of our personal brand, relationships, team dynamics, and workplace culture. Words have the power to create a sense of belonging for yourself and others. Words can also reinforce barriers between people. While we might think we use the same words to describe the actions, traits, and foibles of people regardless of who they are, it turns out we often use language in a gendered way. This means a person's gender identity and gender expression can influence the words we use to describe them. To harness the power of inclusive language, we have to first understand how we use language. Then we can be more thoughtful and intentional in using words that create a sense of belonging for all. Hello, everyone. My name is Lori Nishiura Mackenzie. I use she/her pronouns. I've been leading gender research initiatives for over a decade. I'm an author, speaker, and consultant in the field of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. I invite you to join me in this course to discover ways you can create inclusive interactions and relationships with the words you choose and use.
