Jason Weiss liked thisJason Weiss liked thisEnterprise sales is a completely different game. Here is how I closed a million-dollar deal with Apple. Obviously, I can't share the name of the company, product details, Apple business unit, or any commercial details. Confidentiality comes first. What I can share is the client acquisition strategy, as too many companies believe they can win a Fortune 10 customer using the same sales process they use for everyone else (i.e., 10 - 15 step cold outreach). Planting the seeds, year 2016 I identified Apple as a strategic account and started building relationships. For two years, I engaged with various employees on LinkedIn and shared my expert opinions. My objective wasn't to sell immediately; it was to establish credibility. Well, virtually nothing happened. Employees at companies like Apple are often discouraged from responding to unsolicited outreach. However, silence doesn't necessarily mean a lack of interest. The breakthrough, year 2018 Apple acquired a startup, and its founder responded to my outreach, inviting me to discuss an ongoing project. Was there an element of luck? Absolutely. But I'd spent two years positioning myself for this opportunity. By then, I had established myself as a credible subject matter expert in Apple’s eyes. The next 60 days, from first call to MSA. The conversation led to an NDA, discovery calls, and a pilot project. This is where enterprise sales becomes different. Expect customized pilots, extensive testing, undivided management attention, and significant investment before seeing any meaningful return. We completed the pilot and signed an MSA just two months after our first conversation. Remarkably fast for an enterprise of this size. Months 1–3: Despite signing the MSA, revenue remained modest. We were still proving ourselves. Month 4: The floodgates opened. Revenue quadrupled, then increased tenfold over the following months. After several successful pilots, I secured invitations to approximately 60 RFPs and won around 50% of them. What started as a single conversation evolved into a million-dollar relationship, achieving ROI within the first year. The takeaway Enterprise sales requires patience, credibility, and a willingness to invest long before seeing a return. Even when you closed the deal, winning an MSA isn't the finish line. It's the starting line. Looking back, the most important part wasn't the negotiation or even the successful pilot. It was the two years of reputation building before the first conversation and the two years of reputation building after the first deal was closed. The deal took two months to close.
