Crude oil isn’t uniform—its quality varies by region, influencing everything from refinery design to global trade flows. #Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven reserves, but its flagship blend, Merey 16, is heavy and sour (API gravity ~16°), requiring complex refining. In contrast, global benchmarks like #Brent and #WTI are light and sweet, making them easier and cheaper to process. Despite challenges, heavy crude remains vital—especially for U.S. Gulf Coast refineries designed for such feedstocks.
