Two days into building, we launched on Product Hunt and got a lot of upvotes. The next day, Y Combinator reached out for an interview. Rejected. We kept building. Raised a check from a very special a16z scout 🤫. Then a16z speedrun rejected us. Then YC rejected us. Again. We got into Founders, Inc. and Pivoted on day one. Traction picked up. Customers came in. We gave our third YC interview in the morning of the Founders, Inc. festival. Did not get our hopes up. That evening, we got into YC. What started as a script turned into a company with customers and investors and we don’t take that lightly. It’s been a crazy year and It’s only going to get crazier. In December, we're opening it to investors for the first time. Every quarter, the startups building inside the studio pitch to their peers and to us. We call it Demo Time. Aircall, Front, Spendesk, Swan all pitched there long before anyone knew their names. Last Tuesday, 50 editions in, was the last one behind closed doors. Two things made opening the room in December feel like a natural next step: First, the scale. For years, Demo Time meant 5 to 10 projects. This time, more than 20 teams pitched, across our Start program and our three Sprint cohorts: Climate & Energy Resilience, Defense, AI for Work. Second, the ambition. Atmospheric water generators for military deployments. Second-life batteries feeding the grid. Technology that takes control of the electromagnetic spectrum. Founders pitching to the toughest audience they'll ever face: fellow founders building equally ambitious things. Because it's so easy to just tap and play while you're waiting in line or on the bus, the number of potential players is absolutely massive. 2. The "Free Pizza" Trick. Almost all big mobile games are free to download. It's like getting a free slice of pizza. But once you're in and enjoying it, they get you with the toppings: "Want this cool outfit for $2?" "Need more energy to keep playing for $5?" These tiny purchases add up incredibly fast from millions of players, and a few people spend thousands. 3. It's for Everyone PC gaming often targets people who already love games. Mobile games target your mom, your cousin, your coworker—anyone with a few minutes to kill. They're designed to be super simple and hook you quickly.

Electronic Arts has agreed to a record $55 billion leveraged buyout by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (through Savvy Games), Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. It marks a turning point for the videogame industry. Why it matters: 🎮 Gaming is at a crossroads. After the pandemic boom, the industry is in a downturn, with spending tightening. Publishers are now focused on how to extend the life — and profitability — of their biggest franchises. 📺 IP crossovers are the playbook. Hollywood and streaming platforms are driving value from game-to-screen adaptations: The Last of Us, Fallout, Arcane, Super Mario Bros, and soon Call of Duty. EA already has plans with Amazon MGM to turn The Sims into a movie. 💰 Saudi Arabia’s strategy. PIF has invested billions in gaming and entertainment, from Nintendo to Take-Two to Toei Animation, alongside moves into sports and cinema. Owning EA gives them Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, Madden, and FIFA — franchises with both gaming and media potential. ⚠️ The risk. Expanding IP comes with massive production costs. Other firms, like Embracer, learned the hard way when acquisitions didn’t translate into successful content. As one analyst put it: “The value of high-end gaming IP is only increasing, but execution will be everything.” This deal highlights gaming’s role as a central pillar of global entertainment. In gaming, “platform expertise” doesn’t stop at console vs. PC anymore. Today it also means: • Cloud streaming realities (latency, bitrate, device variance) • Live ops cadence (updates, events, monetization, compliance) • Cross-device performance (memory, thermals, input, UI, certification) That’s why studios are leaning on a different kind of critical hire: the person who can connect engineering, product, QA, and ops early: so you don’t discover “platform issues” at the worst possible moment. A simple framework we use with leaders when defining this role: 1) Where will players actually run it? (top 3 devices/targets) 2) What can fail at scale? (streaming + backend + patching) 3) Who owns the last mile? (cert, perf, live readiness) 4) What’s the success metric? (FPS/latency, crash rate, deploy time) If you’re building this kind of role (or hiring around it), I’m happy to share a few proven job profiles and interview signals we see working across studios.
