I love this company (GPS) — its people, its mission, and the values it lives every day. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead an amazing team, support so many organizations in strengthening their cybersecurity programs, and work alongside some of the very best people in the business. Thank you to everyone who made this journey so meaningful. I’m excited to share that I have joined Urban One, Inc as Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer. Urban One’s mission, culture, and impact make this opportunity especially meaningful to me. I’m honored to join the leadership team and look forward to protecting and enabling a company that informs, entertains, and serves a diverse community across radio, television, and digital media. Michael Nagao liked thisMichael Nagao liked thisA year ago today, I hit the eject button on greed. Not my own, but on an environment consumed by it. As someone driven more by purpose than personal gain, that kind of environment is toxic. And I think, for most people, it is too. The problem with greed is that it's an extreme mindset. And extreme mindsets are often rooted in fear, insecurity, or past experiences. Whatever the cause, they have a way of consuming entire organizations. I learned that my own toxic trait was believing I could change anything. Bad situations. Broken cultures. Even people. But the reality is that people only change when they want to. Some battles aren't yours to fight. A year ago, I felt the full effects of that environment—mentally and physically. Looking back, I still don't know why I spent more than two years trying to fix someone else's problems while sacrificing my own time, energy, and health. What I did learn is this: The moment you leave toxic environments and toxic people, you begin rediscovering who you really are. If you embrace that process, your resilience will often take you somewhere better than you ever expected. One year later, I've never been healthier. Physically or mentally. We have a company now: Factor. Our culture deck is two words. Do Good. Our tagline—Always Forward—is as much about the company as it is about the journey I've been on over the past year. And I haven't taken that journey alone. I've been lucky to work alongside incredible people. Some I've done four or five tours of duty with. Others are new teammates who believed in the vision and chose to take the risk alongside me. As we celebrate Independence Day tomorrow, remember it's about more than cookouts and fireworks. It's also about choosing a different path. Changing your environment can change your trajectory. The devil you know may seem safer than the devil you don't. But what if, on the other side, there is no devil? Just good people working toward a common purpose. Don't settle for anything less.

Michael Nagao liked thisMichael Nagao liked thisJust back from the Gartner Risk & Security Summit and excited to be starting my new journey at Sentra 😀 One thing that stood out from conversations with analysts, CISOs, and security practitioners: the conversation has shifted a lot in just a year. This year, while AI is still everywhere, it's about making it work at scale Three takeaways stood out: 1. AI runs on data - and most of it isn’t ready. The bottleneck isn’t models. It’s messy, scattered, poorly governed data. The shift I kept hearing was from “Which AI model should we use?” to “Can we trust the data behind it?” 2. Identity is now part of the data problem. AI agents are starting to act like employees. That raises a new question: not just who has access - but what has access. 3. AI governance is becoming a business issue, not just a security issue. The rise of shadow AI and concerns around sensitive data exposure mean governance is no longer just a compliance exercise. It's becoming a broader business conversation. My takeaway: The gap between AI ambition and reality is still very real. The winners will be the ones who can operationalize AI safely, not just adopt it quickly. And one stat that stuck with me: Through 2030, 33% of IT work will go toward fixing “AI data debt” - making enterprise data usable, structured, and secure enough for AI. Most organizations are still working with data that wasn’t built for this level of access or scale. That’s where a lot of the real work is happening now. As I begin my next chapter at Sentra, I’m excited to be working on this. #DataSecurity #AIGovernance #DataGovernance #DSPM #GartnerSec #GartnerSecurityRiskManagement

Michael Nagao liked thisMichael Nagao liked this10 yrs ago, while driving from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe, I had an opportunity to take a drive out to the Whitney Portal. Mt. Whitney stands 14,505 ft above sea level and is the highest point in the continental U.S. This weekend I stood on the summit of Mt. Whitney with my 20 yr old son Jack. Rather than hike the trail we took the Mountaineers Route which shortens the 22 mile hike to a 8 mile climb. I swore I would not make this a " lessons learned " post but....here are 2 unexpected things I learned: honest self assessment and trust in your team. Standing at 14,100 ft our guide asked each of us if we felt we could climb the icy 400 ft. rock wall known as " The final 400 " and pictured here. It was 9:00 am and we had already been hiking and climbing for 5 hrs. A " no " from any of us meant none would summit. A " yes " meant we were all committed to spending the next 90 minutes roped together hundreds of feet in the air. We successfully climbed that wall and descended safely as a unit. Doing this with my son is something I cherish. I am posting here because many of my closest friendships have been developed through work. A big THANK YOU to those of you that I bored with my training stories , those that inspired and motivated me, others who gave me training tips, and one that opened his home so we could acclimatize before the trip.
