    Anthropic raised $65B yesterday at a $965B valuation, now the most valuable AI startup in the world. Most of that money goes to one place: compute. But, when Ian S., MTS at Anthropic, moderated a panel I sat on, he opened with a question that has nothing to do with compute or models: when an agent does something, who is actually doing it? An hour later we still didn't have a clean answer, but depend the complexity behind agents and identity. → Eran Kampf (VP Eng, Twingate): there are two kinds of agents. The one running locally acts as me: my identity, my access. The autonomous one running remotely gets its own. → Zohar Einy (CEO, Port.io): identity isn't enough. Every agent needs a human owner, someone who wakes up accountable for what it did overnight. Without that, no one is, and you can't run it at scale. → Kevin Gao (Descope): in practice none of this is centralized. Ten teams build ten agents wired to ten different services, each with its own tokens. Engineers grab an API key that works and move on. Even large, reputable companies are letting that credential sprawl happen right now. At Rootly our agents touch live incidents: confidential, high-stakes, often irreversible. So we drew the line by consequence, not capability. Agents own code review now, for example, because CI catches the misses. But a human still gets paged on incidents. Because owning an agent's identity is config. But... owning what happens if something goes is our job. So that's the asymmetry. We just put a near-trillion-dollar valuation on the models. But the layer that decides who's accountable when one of them acts on your behalf are still mostly API keys and good intentions.
