The Pacific War (1941-45) contributed many lasting innovations and developments to global warfare. This theatre of the Second World War witnessed the end of battleships as the primary mode of naval warfare, replacing them with aircraft carriers that could send their planes to engage an unseen enemy many miles distant. Amphibious warfare was perfected to a high degree of efficiency, as was the integration of large-scale multiservice operations and the refinement of military logistics on a massive scale. Specialised weapons development such as flamethrowers, armoured landing vehicles, and napalm made warfare even more deadly and brutal. Die Like an Egyptian: How to Reach the Field of Reeds (Aaru): An Afterlife Guide from New Kingdom Egypt (c. 1550-1069 BCE): Ancient Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife centered on the idea that death marked the beginning of a spiritual journey rather than the end of existence. During the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1069 BCE), funerary texts such as the Book of the Dead described how the deceased navigated the Duat, overcame supernatural obstacles through ritual knowledge, and ultimately faced judgement before Osiris. 🌶️ Between c. 1450 and 1650, demand for spices and other high-value plant commodities became an important catalyst for European maritime expansion. Pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg were especially prized because their principal sources lay thousands of kilometres from European markets and were already embedded within extensive Asian, Indian Ocean, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean trade networks. European attempts to reach these markets directly by sea contributed to the wider maritime expansion conventionally known as the Age of Discovery and intensified competition for control of production centres, ports, and oceanic routes. Together, these commodities demonstrate how geography, scarcity, commerce, and state power became increasingly interconnected in the emerging early modern global economy. European powers sought not simply access to spices but control over their cultivation, shipping routes, ports, and distribution, contributing to colonial conquest, naval warfare, and the rise of chartered companies such as the Dutch East India Company (VOC, 1602) and the English East India Company (1600). This collection of resources presents the Pacific theatre of the Second World War (1939-45), which saw the expansion of the Japanese Empire before the USA was brought into the conflict following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. US and Allied forces steadily liberated Pacific islands like Guadalcanal, Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima. The last great battle of WWII was at Okinawa, where all the features of the Pacific War were combined: naval battles, naval and air bombardment of Japanese defences, amphibious landings of US Marines, and desperate jungle-fighting.
