Are stablecoin payments actually cheaper? On the latest CEO Beat, Nium CEO Prajit Nanu challenges one of crypto's biggest assumptions. Today, cross-border stablecoin payments still incur costs at every conversion — from fiat to stablecoins and back to local currency — meaning traditional payment infrastructure can still be competitive on price and speed in many corridors. But that raises the bigger question: is the long-term value of stablecoins in payments, treasury, or both? As adoption grows, do stablecoins remain invisible settlement rails, or do they become money people and businesses actually hold and spend? Ask a corporate treasurer how many usable dollars their company has right now across every account, and you'll usually get a pause. Not because the money isn't there. Because nobody can see all of it at once. Prajit Nanu, founder and CEO of Nium, made that point in a PYMNTS TV Summer School conversation with PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster. His own company keeps hundreds of bank accounts across roughly 65 to 70 countries, and even a business built for this problem doesn't always have a continuous view of its own dollars. If Nium struggles with it, most multinationals have no shot. Webster called it trapped dollars. Money gets positioned days before it's needed because the treasurer can't be certain when it lands or how far the exchange rate drifts while everyone waits. That idle cash is a cost almost nobody books. Nanu thinks this, not consumer payments, is what stablecoins were actually built for. He described the opportunity as settlement value rather than payments value, a treasury layer that moves money instantly among entities. Run it overnight: collect Brazilian reais during the day, hold the value in a dollar-backed stablecoin after hours, convert back before the shop reopens. His warning about the pitch is blunt. Stablecoins today, he said, are like a drug trying to treat 20 different problems. Watch the full interview to hear why Nanu believes stablecoins only work for enterprises once they stop feeling like stablecoins. https://hubs.ly/Q04q6d5t0
