Big kudos to Mod Op’s SVP of Technology, Derick Schaefer, on the launch of his new book on modern CLI’s. Proud to have this big brain in on our team offering thought leadership for clients.
𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝟒𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬, I’ve seen their evolution — from cryptic tools, through near demise, to a remarkable resurgence as powerful, modern interfaces that drive today’s developer workflows. I’m proud to announce the release of my new book, >𝐂𝐋𝐈: 𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬, which captures a decades-long journey — from the fundamentals to the future. My hope is that it helps designers and developers build CLIs that are powerful, composable, and enduring — tools that provide value for decades to come. The book features spotlights and insights from some of the greats. From the 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐏-𝐂𝐋𝐈 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, the insights and support of Cristi Burca and Daniel Bachhuber, to modern terminal innovators such as Zach Lloyd of Warp, this book grew from well-intentioned ideas into meaningful direction and guidance. A special thanks to Automattic (Chenda Ngak), Ookla (Michelle Badrian), Microsoft (Kassidy Kauzlarich), and Google (Matt Renner ty for intro) for their brand oversight and directional support along the way. The Go community provided a strong foundation and inspiration throughout this journey. Conversations with former Microsoft collegues Tom Lindley, Charles Stacy Harris III, and Mark Phillips took this book to new heights. Henry Coles, a huge thanks for the viewpoints on data and quality. Steven Francia, your Go contributions of pflags and Cobra greatly simplified demonstrating flags and command models. A nod of appreciation to Joe Dingman and Kyle McBride for the 2017 introduction to Go. As always, thank you to the discerning eye of my wife Claudia Schaefer elevating the editorial standard. Due to its detailed nature, this book is available in paperback and hardcover only through a number of global online retailers. https://moderncli.dev . This book was challenging, fun, and a great excuse to connect with former colleagues and forge a number of new relationships along the way.
