University of Georgia writing instructor Saurabh Anand shares a five-step activity that helps students trace how an idea develops through scholarship. "Biography of an Idea" begins with one scholarly article and asks students to follow a concept, question, or argument backward through its sources and forward through later work. Along the way, they practice citation tracing, source evaluation, and synthesis. Designed for first-year writing, the activity can be adapted for research-based courses across disciplines. ITHAKA and Amazon Web Services (AWS) built an on-demand remediation pipeline to help make PDFs on JSTOR more #accessible at scale. 📄 When a user requests an accessible PDF, the system processes the document, validates it against accessibility standards, and saves it for future readers. Early results show a 98% accessibility check pass rate and costs more than 97% lower than manual remediation. Collection description is more than data entry. Decisions about names, dates, subjects, relationships, context, and uncertainty shape how materials can be searched, understood, and used. For #SpecialCollections, that work often requires knowledge grounded in the institution, community, and historical context surrounding the materials. Technology can support #Metadata work at greater scale, but professional judgment remains essential. The goal is not simply to create more description. It is to create useful, responsible pathways into collections—while recognizing the expertise required to interpret them.
