Updates

  • This week, the Kentucky State Police Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. traveled to the Salato Wildlife Center to recognize two astounding Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Game Wardens. On May 16, 2025, an EF-4 tornado tore through Laurel, Pulaski, and Russell Counties, remaining on the ground for nearly 60 miles with wind speeds of 170mph. This tornado left widespread destruction, leveling homes and businesses, killing 19 people. Among those who immediately took action alongside our KSP Troopers were Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Game Wardens, Captain Jerrod Alley, and Warden Braxton Cottongame. The group of responding officers worked diligently, using a bottle jack and a cinder block to remove a tree that had trapped a Pulaski County man for 2.5 hours. Then, Captain Alley and Warden Cottongame helped carry the man to safety through half a mile of extremely difficult terrain. For their inspiring courage, Captain Alley and Warden Cottongame were presented with the KSP Commissioner’s Award, which is bestowed on non-KSP personnel or civilians who distinguished themselves by performing a lifesaving act or a meritorious achievement.

  • This week’s Kentucky State Police Employee Spotlight focuses on Trooper First Class Adam Jones. He is a detective at Post 1, Mayfield. Trooper Jones is from Mayfield, Ky., and is an eleven-year veteran of the agency. He is among the troopers being honored tonight during the KSP Sworn Awards. When asked why he feels his job is important, Trooper Jones explained, "The job I do as part of the overall Kentucky State Police is to speak for victims of crimes or those involved in serious situations when they themselves are most vulnerable. Oftentimes, we must react after things go wrong, and it is important for us to respond with respect, patience, and understanding." Fun fact: Trooper Jones and a friend are on a quest to visit every Major League Baseball stadium. We thank Trooper Jones for his commitment to excellence and public safety. KSP is searching for the next generation of troopers. Applications are being accepted for Cadet Class 108 at: JoinKSP.com #KentuckyStatePolice #LawEnforcement
