About us

Ethereum is a platform and a programming language that makes it possible for any developer to build and publish next-generation decentralized applications. Ethereum can be used to codify, decentralize, secure and trade just about anything: voting, domain names, financial exchanges, crowdfunding, company governance, contracts and agreements of most kind, intellectual property, and even smart property thanks to hardware integration. Ethereum borrows the concept of decentralized consensus that makes bitcoin so resilient, yet makes it trivial to build on its foundation. To find out more about how Ethereum works, consult the whitepaper. This page is managed and operated by members of the Ethereum Foundation.

Over the past weeks we’ve been publicly introducing Ethereum Institutional as an independent entity dedicated to accelerating institutional adoption of Ethereum and its broader ecosystem. Today, we’re excited to share the next step: the close of our initial ecosystem funding round and supporter coalition, with broad participation and support from individuals and entities focused on driving institutional adoption of Ethereum. Our ecosystem funding round is anchored by BitMine Immersion Technologies, Sharplink, Ethereum co‑founders Joseph Lubin, and Mihai Alisie, alongside a larger group of individuals and crypto‑native institutions. We’re backed by 100+ ecosystem participants who have come together around Ethereum Institutional and our mission to accelerate institutional adoption of Ethereum, each contributing capital, time, expertise, and/or amplification to help drive this work forward. This support gives us the mandate and runway to push harder: turning years of institutional engagement into a sustained, global effort to bring tokenization, stablecoins, and market infrastructure onchain on Ethereum and its ecosystem. We’re now ramping up our efforts. In the months ahead, we will: → Accelerate direct engagement with banks, asset managers, custodians, market infrastructures, fintechs, and sovereign institutions evaluating Ethereum. → Advance concrete workstreams around tokenization, stablecoins, market infrastructure,, and on‑chain settlement on Ethereum and its L2s. → Scale our core focus areas: institutional education, market intelligence, ETH & ecosystem marketing, industry discovery & requirements, and high‑signal institutional convenings. Thank you to everyone across the ecosystem who is helping drive institutional adoption of Ethereum and bring more real‑world assets and market infrastructure on‑chain.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘂𝗺'𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 📃 An updated assessment from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance at Cambridge Judge Business School re-evaluates Ethereum's environmental footprint years after its Proof-of-Stake transition – establishing the network's annual electricity consumption at 7.87 GWh and emissions at 2.37 ktCO₂e, with sustainable energy sources comprising 56.4% of the electricity mix. When Ethereum transitioned from Proof‑of‑Work to Proof‑of‑Stake in September 2022, its electricity demand fell by more than 99.9% - a reduction we documented at the time and which is now well established. But the network has not stood still. Since the Merge, major protocol upgrades have changed how nodes handle data and how validators are organised. These developments warrant a fresh, evidence‑based assessment. Today, we’re pleased to launch the report, ‘𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲 – 𝗔 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿’. Built on direct wall‑plug measurements across 20 client configurations, the study provides a more granular and up‑to‑date picture of Ethereum’s energy use and climate impact. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 🔹 Electricity: ~7.87 GWh per year (~0.90 MW continuous) — less than the annual consumption of major landmarks such as the British Museum 🔹 Emissions: ~2.37 ktCO₂e per year — around 99.98% below pre‑Merge levels, comparable to ~900 UK homes 🔹 Infrastructure: ~8,522 full nodes underpin the network, averaging ~105W each — roughly equivalent to a laptop; nodes, not validators, drive electricity use 🔹 Hosting: ~64% in cloud/data centres, 36% residential; largest providers include Hetzner, AWS, and OVH 🔹 Geography: Distributed but concentrated — the US (31%), Germany (16%), Finland (8%), and France (6%) host ~62% of nodes 🔹 Electricity mix: ~56.4% from sustainable sources — notably above the global average (~43%) As electricity is no longer the primary cost of network security, Ethereum’s environmental footprint is increasingly shaped by the carbon intensity of the grids powering its nodes, and those grids continue to decarbonise. We are grateful to the Ethereum Foundation for supporting this research, and to collaborators and reviewers across the ecosystem whose contributions strengthened the analysis. 📊 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: https://lnkd.in/eifF6Bu4 🔎 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮: https://lnkd.in/eN7253QT 💡 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: https://lnkd.in/ePJWkfYA Alexander Neumueller Bryan Zhang Hunter Sims Hugo Coelho Wenbin W. Announcing Ethereum Institutional: an independent non-profit dedicated to accelerating institutional adoption of Ethereum and its broader ecosystem. Choosing Ethereum isn’t a single decision. It unfolds through a long run of technical and commercial decisions, and throughout that process, institutions need a credible counterpart who can help them navigate the ecosystem and brief leadership with clear, unbiased answers. What’s needed to support this process is a credible, independent front door: one that represents the full Ethereum ecosystem, without bias, and that institutions can engage with directly. Ethereum Institutional is being established to fill that gap. The timing is not coincidental. Institutions are making long-term infrastructure decisions today. These are foundational platform choices with enduring network effects. Ethereum needs a dedicated, neutral team in the room to make the case for Ethereum and the ecosystem built on it in a way institutions can trust. Ethereum Institutional’s founding team built the Ethereum Foundation's Enterprise function from scratch, engaging hundreds of institutions across banks, asset managers, custodians, and market infrastructures and helped them move from exploration to real deployments. Ethereum Institutional scales that work, independently, with long-term funding. We center on five focus areas from day one: → Institutional Engagement: structured education, briefings, and hands‑on support for decision‑makers. → Institutional Intelligence: research on institutional needs, deployments, and market structure. → Ethereum Ecosystem & ETH Marketing: telling the story of Ethereum as a settlement layer and highlighting concrete ecosystem wins. → Industry Discovery & Requirements: gathering, prioritizing, and feeding institutional requirements back into the ecosystem. → Events: convening institutions and ecosystem teams around shared standards and real use cases. Today we launch with the support of Bitmine, Sharplink and Joseph Lubin as our anchor funders, and with a broad individual and institutional contributors that we will share soon. The world's largest institutions are deciding where tokenization, stablecoins, and on-chain markets will settle. We're ready to make Ethereum the base layer for institutional finance.
