Alongside the opening of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) co-hosted with Meta, our 2026 Operating Board Chair, a side event to examine areas of convergence and divergence between terrorist and violent extremist groups and criminal organizations. Discussions highlighted three key themes and opportunities: ➡️ Defining terrorism, violent extremism, and the impacts of dangerous organizations requires careful consideration: Greater precision and clarity in how we define terrorism, violent extremism, and crime ensures threats are addressed in appropriate ways, both on and offline, and approaches that blur this distinction risk being counterproductive for both policy and practice. ➡️ Converging harms demand cross-platform and cross-sector inputs: Terrorists and violent extremists use different platforms for different purposes, from youth recruitment to financing and coordination, and move between services to evade enforcement. Cross-platform signal sharing helps trust and safety teams understand the entirety of the threat. ➡️ Investments in prevention require trust and partnerships: Effective prevention models are grounded in trust-building, local perspectives, subject-matter expertise, and cross-sector collaboration. Partnerships with communities, civil societies, and policymakers are essential for this approach. Across the fireside chat and panels, participants underscored the challenge of meeting increasingly young, individually motivated, and rapidly mobilized perpetrators, reiterating the importance of collaborative efforts among civil society, tech, and governments to build the partnerships needed to address today's threat landscape. Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to these productive discussions - we look forward to continued collaboration as we work towards improving online safety for all. ➡️ Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/edBAx4A9 #GIFCT #OnlineSafety #Counterterrorism #CVE #TrustAndSafety #MultiStakeholder #Collaboration
