Unmanned systems are transforming the battlespace, but their full potential is only realized when they are part of the network. As military operations become increasingly dispersed and data-driven, drones, unmanned ground vehicles, and autonomous maritime platforms can no longer operate as isolated assets. They must become integrated nodes in the tactical communications network, sharing mission-critical information securely and in real time. In Shephard Media's article, Sami Savolainen discusses how Bittium Tough SDR Unmanned™ brings unmanned systems into the same resilient tactical IP network as soldiers, vehicles, sensors, and command elements. By connecting UxVs directly to the battlefield network, defence forces can extend situational awareness, strengthen command and control, and support decision-making across domains. From airborne relay nodes in remote Arctic environments to operations in contested electromagnetic environments, integrated communications are becoming a critical enabler of operational effectiveness and decision dominance. What if every radio was an electronic warfare sensor? As the electromagnetic battlespace becomes increasingly contested, military communications networks must do more than connect forces. They must help forces understand, adapt to, and operate effectively within the environment. In a recent Shephard article, Matti Passoja of Bittium and Marcus Nordstrom of MarshallAI discuss how tactical communications networks evolve into distributed sensing systems, enabling radios to detect anomalies, monitor spectrum activity, and enhance operational resilience. By combining Bittium’s expertise in secure tactical communications with MarshallAI’s advanced AI capabilities, we are delivering new ways to enhance situational awareness, cognitive spectrum use, and decision-making at the tactical edge. As the future battlespace becomes increasingly connected, data-driven, and contested. AI-enhanced communications can help transform networks into a source of operational insight and decision advantage. 🔗Read the article: https://lnkd.in/d3b3SfNz #Bittium #TacticalComms #ElectronicWarfare #AI #DefenceTechnology

Bittium is proud to contribute to the development of the new ESSOR Narrow Band Waveform (ENBWF) as part of the multinational a4ESSOR joint venture, advancing secure and interoperable tactical communications for European and NATO forces. The new waveform, based on the future NATO standard STANAG 5630 Edition 2, will enable allied nations to use their own software-defined radios while maintaining seamless interoperability across multinational operations. Already successfully deployed in Bittium Tough SDR™ radios, the ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform (EHDRWF) has demonstrated the value of standardized waveforms in coalition operations. The development of ENBWF represents the next step in strengthening resilient, sovereign, and interoperable communications across the full spectrum of operational scenarios. 🔗Read press release: https://lnkd.in/dXFa-2hX Pictures: OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) a4ESSOR SAS Indra Group Leonardo RADMOR S.A. The future battlefield cannot run on foreign permission. As AI, software and digital networks become an integral part of military capability, sovereign control over critical technologies is emerging as a strategic requirement. The question is no longer only who owns the platform, but who controls the data, software, updates, AI models and communications networks that military operations depend on. In an interview with Nordic Defence Review at Eurosatory 2026, Bittium CEO Petri Toljamo discussed why resilient, software-defined and sovereign tactical communications are a key enabler for decision-making in contested environments, and how Europe can strengthen its technological autonomy through secure battlefield networking. Finland and Ukraine both know what it means to take security seriously. Bittium and Ukrainian secure communications manufacturer HIMERA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, formalising cooperation between the two companies on strengthening defence capabilities in both countries. The partnership brings together two complementary strengths. ➡️Bittium has more than two decades of experience developing tactical and secure communications solutions alongside the Finnish Defence Forces, with a portfolio spanning Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN), Bittium Tough SDR™, Bittium MissionNet™, Bittium Tough Mobile™ and SafeMove®. ➡️HIMERA was founded in Ukraine in 2022, built on firsthand operational experience, and has developed field-proven tactical communications systems that combine resistance to electronic warfare, ease of use and scalability. Together, the two companies will explore interoperability and integration across their respective portfolios to address the evolving communications needs of modern defence forces. The agreement was signed at URC 2026, the Ukraine Recovery Conference co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine in Gdańsk on 25-26 June. This year's conference introduced a dedicated security and defence dimension for the first time, reflecting the growing international consensus that Ukraine's reconstruction and long-term security are inseparable. "HIMERA has demonstrated extraordinary capability under real operational pressure, and Bittium brings a deep portfolio of tactical and secure communications solutions built alongside the Finnish Defence Forces over more than two decades. Together we can offer something genuinely valuable to both countries, and beyond." Tommi Kangas, Senior Vice President, Bittium Defence & Security. "Cooperation between Finland and Ukraine is a very natural one. We face many of the same adversaries and security challenges. By working together, we can help make both countries safer." Misha Rudominski, co-founder and CEO, HIMERA. We thank Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo and Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine Serhii Boyev for their support at the event. 🔗 http://bit.ly/4eKScxA #defencetech #tacticalcomms #Finland #Ukraine #URC2026 #NATO #Bittium #HIMERA #defencecooperation #C4ISR
