One of the most meaningful parts of travelling through Africa is meeting the people who live there. Whether you're visiting a Maasai village in Kenya, a local school in Uganda or a community project in South Africa, a small gift can be a wonderful gesture of appreciation. The key is to bring something useful, rather than expensive. Our travel specialists often recommend items such as: 🎨 Pencils, notebooks and colouring supplies for children ⚽ Footballs, skipping ropes or simple outdoor games 🧴 Soap, toothbrushes and other basic hygiene products 👕 Good-quality children's clothing or shoes in great condition One thing we always advise against? Handing out sweets or money directly to children. While it comes from a good place, it can unintentionally: - Create dependency or encourage children to approach tourists instead of attending school. - Trigger health issues in places where health access is potentially scarce. - And as a general rule, we’d advice to avoid too much plastic/packages as waste management can be an issue in many areas. Instead, we recommend giving your donations through a school, community leader or trusted local organisation. That way, they'll reach the people who need them most.
