🇪🇺 lensEU: making Europe easier to understand, one story at a time   AFP is delighted to be part of lensEU (Localised European News Service), an ambitious media collaboration bringing together eight leading European news organisations with a shared goal: helping citizens better understand how European issues affect their daily lives.   Every week, lensEU publishes: 🎙️ A podcast (every Tuesday) exploring major European topics through fresh perspectives and on-the-ground reporting. 💌 A newsletter (every Friday) tackling the topic discussed in the podcast in greater depth and breadth.   From housing and inflation to the green transition and the fight against disinformation, lensEU focuses on the issues that matter most to people across Europe.   To reach audiences as widely as possible, all content is produced in five languages — English, German, Polish, Latvian and Croatian. Stories are created collaboratively by the project partners, with editorial leadership rotating to ensure a truly pan-European perspective.   Co-funded by the European Union and running until spring 2028, lensEU will produce more than 300 pieces of content over the next two years.   All podcasts and newsletters are available free of charge via The Audio Marketplace.   👉 Discover the project: u.afp.com/SrKs

🔎 AFP trains Argentine journalists under the regional "Comunidad Informada" project AFP organised two fact-checking training courses in Buenos Aires from 20 to 26 July, bringing together 43 journalists from several provinces across Argentina. These professionals join more than 70 journalists who have already taken part in similar sessions in Lima and Bogotá. “The training was incredible. It was highly relevant and comprehensive, and the trainers explained complex concepts in a very accessible way. I’m leaving with plenty of work to do in order to start putting these tools into practice,” said Virginia Digón, a journalist with La Voz del Interior SA newspaper in Córdoba. The two three-day training sessions were held as part of the regional Comunidad Informada (“Informed Community”) project, which operates across five Latin American countries. French Ambassador to Argentina Romain Nadal welcomed participants at the opening of the first training course in the Argentine capital. The sessions were led by Nadia Nasanovsky, Latin America digital investigations training coordinator, and Manuela Silva, editor of the Spanish-language fact-checking service. The workshop covered a broad range of open-source digital investigation techniques and tools, using a hands-on approach illustrated with both national and international case studies. Particular emphasis was placed on disinformation and artificial intelligence. The first session was designed for general assignment journalists, while the second was intended for journalists with prior fact-checking experience. Comunidad Informada aims to strengthen information integrity, media resilience and the capacity of civil society to counter disinformation across South America. The initiative is funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE | Ministère des Affaires étrangères français), managed by CFI, agence française de développement médias, and implemented in partnership with AFP, Chequeado and Fundación Gabo.

🌏 AFP joined dozens of top newsroom leaders and executives in New Delhi for the South Asia News Media Festival from July 22-23, 2026.   The importance of on-the-ground reporting, branding and platform diversification in a world of AI slop dominated discussions at the conference, hosted by the International News Media Association (INMA) and sponsored by AFP. Daniel Funke, AFP's regional head of digital investigation for Asia-Pacific, spoke on a panel titled "Trust under pressure: Rebuilding credibility across creation, verification, monetisation, and regulation." He discussed how the agency fact-checks AI-generated imagery during breaking news events such as the New Delhi protests -- and why it is crucial for publishers to verify user-generated content before redistributing it. Sarah Stewart, sales and marketing director for APAC, also attended the conference alongside Rohit Tandon and Kapil Chaudhari

🏆 Animation on the ICC rewarded at the Victoria & Albert Illustration Awards The work of Julie Pereira and AFP’s data visualisation team on the International Criminal Court (ICC) was recognised on 1 July 2026 at the Victoria and Albert Illustration Awards, winning the Adult Factual category. This year, AFP was featured alongside prestigious publications including The New Yorker and The Economist. Julie Pereira’s animation explains the role of the International Criminal Court, which investigates and prosecutes individuals responsible for acts of aggression against states and populations, including war crimes and crimes against humanity. To communicate these complex issues, Pereira created a series of simplified, universal characters representing the aggressor, the judge and the civilian. The judges praised the animation for conveying these concepts clearly without being overly literal or unsettling. They particularly highlighted its economical use of shapes and symbolic forms to drive the narrative and make a challenging subject accessible to a wide audience. With this award, the animation joins the permanent collection of the renowned London Museum and will be displayed to the public for two years from this summer.   The project had already been recognised last year with a nomination for a News and Documentary Emmy Award, in a category ultimately won by The New York Times.
