Many prostate cancers grow slowly, which can give patients and their physicians time to carefully understand the diagnosis and consider the available options. When a loved one is diagnosed with prostate cancer, the instinct is often to act quickly and pursue treatment right away. That response comes from a place of love, but prostate cancer can behave very differently from one person to another. In some cases, active surveillance may be appropriate, while treatment can have meaningful effects on urinary function, sexual health, and quality of life.
