We’re delivering the science Australians need for the nation they want - productive, sustainable, healthy and secure.
About us
For more than a century, we've been improving the lives of people everywhere with our science. Since we started life as the Advisory Council of Science and Industry in 1916, we've advanced Australia with a range of inventions and innovations that have had significant positive impact on the lives of people around the world. These include fast WiFi, polymer banknotes, the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, and Aerogard, just to name a few. We work with industry, government and the research community to turn science into solutions to address Australia's greatest challenges, including food security and quality; sustainable energy and resources; health and wellbeing; resilient and valuable environments; future industries; and a secure Australia and region.

Digging deeper into community-led post-mining planning. ⛏️ Our researchers Tira Foran and Taryn Kong have been collaborating with communities from the Latrobe Valley (Victoria) to Bowen Basin (Queensland) and Bell Bay (Tasmania), to develop shared visions and planning tools for regional futures. Their projects, supported by CRC TiME, are breaking new ground in collaborative regional economic planning. Their goal? To ensure communities have a strong and informed say in regional development. Join CRC TiME's webinar on 6 November to catch the latest findings, with local insights on regional development. Attendees from industry, government, and communities will also get first access to new resources for collaborative planning! Register today: https://lnkd.in/gMVDUUrY

Rating cinema’s quantum accuracy is a Mission Possible with these experts.🍿 Our quantum experts Timothy van der Laan, Dr Farina Riaz and W. Y. Sarah Lau have put pop culture under the microscope, rating and reviewing iconic quantum moments on screen. For our final quantum review we’re disentangling Mission Impossible, The Big Bang Theory and Futurama. Get behind the scenes access to our quantum research: https://lnkd.in/grrcYzYr

You've never seen the Milky Way like this before. 🌌 This incredible new radio image, crafted by astronomers at ICRAR (International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research), maps our Galaxy in stunning new detail. The image was made by surveying hundreds of hours of data collected using the Curtin University-led Murchison Widefield Array. It's a radio telescope located at Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, our Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory on Wajarri Yamaji Country. The image shows a mix of pulsars, planetary nebulae, and regions of dense, ionised gas clouds in space. Read the story: https://lnkd.in/g5-H8Kxn

The health ecosystem is changing. 👩⚕️ And our Australian e-Health Research Centre is helping lead the way. As digital health technology becomes commonplace, we need to make sure new technologies are anchored in improving the health system for patients and clinicians. Here's how our work in digital health is doing just that: https://lnkd.in/gxRjmgdV

Hay there, innovators. This one's for you. 🐄 We've partnered with Meat & Livestock Australia, Google Australia and Kaggle to launch a global competition with a US$75,000 prize pool to advance the use of AI in agriculture. The challenge: to improve the accuracy and efficiency of estimating pasture biomass. This is the amount of grass and other edible plants available for livestock to graze, which impacts productivity, environmental sustainability and biodiversity. Competitors will use pasture images linked with detailed field measurements to train an AI model to estimate pasture availability for livestock. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gybt9sMD

Taking a byte out of agriculture. 🌾 However you feel about AI, it’s here to stay and is reshaping our lives, including farmers'. It has the power to uncover hidden patterns in crops and climate, offering farmers powerful new tools for resilience and productivity. In the future, whether AI will be embraced or fuel fragmentation and mistrust, depends on the choices made today. That's why responsible, application-driven AI, co-designed with farmers and communities, is essential to building lasting trust in digital agriculture. Helping make life-saving medical treatments more accessible. 💊 Last week in Naarm (Melbourne), we joined the AusBiotech International Conference 2025 to share our work supporting vaccine and therapeutics manufacturing. Our experts shared how we're helping advance therapies and vaccines for unmet diseases in the Asia Pacific region, and enabling equitable access to health products. We were proud to sponsor the session on Indigenous knowledge systems and how they can complement modern biotechnology.
