It was another form of transportation, so to speak, that eventually led Jess Cook of CarGurus into the car business. Horseback riding. "I spent a lot of time riding on trails when I was younger, and that’s where I met friends who rode dirt bikes," said Cook, one of Auto Remarketing's Women in Retail honorees. "We’d even race my horse against their bikes, which, looking back, was probably the beginning of my obsession with anything fast and loud. "Over time, horses turned into dirt bikes, and then dirt bikes turned into cars. I became fascinated with how things worked under the hood. I’ve rebuilt motors in a few of my own cars, spent years going to car shows, and always loved being around car culture," she said. "What I enjoy most about the industry, though, is the people. Car people — whether they work in this industry or just appreciate it on their own time — are unlike anyone else. Shared hobbies somehow turn into lifelong friendships really quickly in this world." • In case you missed it, our Q1 2026 Intelligence Report is live with a look at where shoppers are driving momentum. Key takeaways: 🔄 The used market is on the move. Sales of nearly new vehicles (2 years or younger) jumped 24% YoY, with top-sellers including the Chevrolet Trax, Jeep Compass, Kia K4, Toyota Corolla, and Nissan Sentra. ⛽ Gas prices are shifting gears on powertrain interest. With prices hitting $4/gallon, EV and hybrid views on CarGurus increased, and used EV sales demand grew, up almost 30% YoY. 🌿 In the new market, hybrids carry the tightest supply of any powertrain. Toyota models (RAV4, Grand Highlander, Sienna, and Corolla Cross) are carrying the lowest supply.
