‼️ The Australian government led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has just extended the operations of BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA)'s Saraji coal mine by 30 years. 🏭 This will emit another 120 million tonnes of climate pollution -- solidifying Australia’s position as a major fossil fuel polluter, even as it co-leads the #COP31 climate summit. “Earlier this year, I stood at the foot of the Saraji mine and listened to the plight of First Nations custodians whose lands, streams and cultural heritage were plundered to make way for BMA’s coal expansion. These coal mines wreak havoc on people and the planet, both at the point of extraction in Australia, and at the point of climate impact in the Pacific. "Nothing is left," her aunt said. "Everything is destroyed." Youth climate activist Dikshya Subedi has spent years explaining flood risk maps to government officials and pushing the phrase "climate crisis" into policy rooms. Then on August 26, 2026, the crisis arrived at her own family's doorstep when a glacier sheared off high in the mountains, sending a flash flood down the Bhote Koshi River at speeds of nearly 200 km/h and burying her husband's home village of Devighat, Nepal in minutes. But this doesn't mean that all is lost. We can still bring temperatures back down if countries act with urgency now. "We absolutely have to claw back every fraction of a degree possible...Just because overshoot is deemed inevitable, that doesn't mean we stop fighting to limit it to as short an overshoot as possible. The horrific disaster in Nepal made it clear: climate heating is destabilising glaciers in the Himalaya. “This is the reality: those who have contributed the least are paying the highest price, especially with their lives,” 350.org's Savio Carvalho tells The Independent. What's worse, existing international funds meant to help countries like Nepal cope with disasters remain inadequate and hard to access, often taking months or years to arrive, and sometimes coming as loans that leave poorer countries deeper in debt rather than grants. 350.org is calling on world leaders to act -- including by making sure that polluters help pay for the response. https://lnkd.in/gUPnATsf

🏔️ Nepal contributes less than 0.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. But it is among the most climate-vulnerable nations on earth, where warming doesn’t arrive gradually but as a wall of water and mud tearing through a valley in minutes. Youth activist Dikshya Subedi writes for Al Jazeera Media Network on how seven years of climate advocacy did not prepare her for the horror and despair she saw when a glacial flood swept away her husband's village. Nepal urgently needs early warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, locally led adaptation and disaster preparedness. But it cannot do it alone:   "Wealthy nations, which are the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases and thus most responsible for the present climate crisis, should not limit their response to repatriating their dead citizens from my country and issuing symbolic gestures of support.
