In April, two New Jersey men received a combined 200 months in prison for running laptop farms that placed North Korean operatives at 100+ U.S. companies. In July, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed a DPRK IT worker performing work for a federal agency. Days later, eleven governments issued a joint alert. Here's what connects every case: nothing was breached. Each operative cleared a background check, passed video interviews, and started work with credentials the company issued them. The background checks came back clean because the stolen identities belong to real Americans. The interviews passed because deepfake injection attacks bypass the camera entirely, and the person who interviews may not be the person who works; these teams rotate. Detection means verifying the human, not the records: liveness-verified ID proofing before any credential is issued, identity bound to the device, and re-verification at account recovery and privilege escalation, the exact moments the operator behind an account can change. Our CSO Michael Engle has a new article in Forbes on why hiring fraud has become a Know Your Employee (KYE) problem. A few things he covers: ✔️ The hiring process itself is now an attack surface, with fake applicants and synthetic identities showing up before an account ever exists ✔️ Credentials and MFA don't prove who is behind the account after login ✔️ The service desk is a pressure point, from password resets and device enrollment to MFA re-registration and privileged access requests ✔️ Continuous verification has to be designed with privacy limits so it doesn't become surveillance ✔️ KYE fails when it lives in a separate console instead of the systems HR, IT, and security already work in His bottom line: KYE has to run as a continuous thread through the employee lifecycle, because hiring fraud doesn't stop being a problem once the offer letter is signed.
