Score Tiebreaks: In case of a tie for any placing, the tied players split the combined prize pool for those positions equally. For example, a two-way tie for first results in scores of 2–2–1–0 across the four players.

2026 Chess Club Showdown Official Rules
Schedule
Chess Club Showdown is a recurring monthly event, each consisting of a Multi-Club Arena (“MCA”) followed by a Club Match between the top two scoring clubs. The first Chess Club Showdown is on September 30, 2026 with future dates to be announced.
Tournament Format
Multi-Club Arena
Players will compete in a two-hour Multi-Club Arena with score-based pairings and a 5+0 time control. Standard Chess.com arena scoring and tiebreaks will apply. Players will earn 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Consecutive wins will be worth additional points, with the second win in a row worth 3 points and every consecutive win thereafter worth 4 points. Draw offers are not permitted until after move 40. Clubs will be ranked by total points, counting their top 50 scores. If two or more teams are tied in total points, the following tiebreakers will be applied:
- Total points of the top 20 players
- Total points of the top 10 players
- Total points of the top 5 players
- Total points of the top player
- If the tie remains, the prizes will be split
- If a tie remains between the 2nd and 3rd place teams, the Chess.com Blitz ratings of each team’s top scorer will be compared. The team with the higher rated player will be granted 2nd place. If both players are tied in rating, the ratings of the next eligible players will be compared until the tie is broken (2nd vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 3rd, etc).
Club Match
Following the Multi-Club Arena, the top 2 ranked clubs will compete in a Club Match. All players in these clubs are eligible to register, and players do not have to play in the same Club they played for in the Multi-Club Arena. The Club Match is capped to the top 50 highest rated registered players from each club. If fewer than 50 players sign up for either club, the number of matches in the Club Match will be adjusted to the number of players from the club with fewer players. For example, if Club A has 100 registered players and Club B has 30 registered players, then the Club Match will be 30 matches, between the 30 highest rated players of each club.
Players will compete in a 2-game match against the same-seed player from the other club (e.g. the highest rated player of Club A plays the highest rated player of Club B, 2nd vs 2nd, etc…). Each game has standard chess scoring: 1 point for a win, 0.5 points for a draw and 0 points for a loss. The time control is 5+0 and draw offers are not permitted until after move 40.

For Sunday matches, Divisions 4 or lower may reschedule playoff matches to any time on the default match day or on the Monday or Tuesday after it.
Rescheduling within 15 minutes of the match start time is not allowed.
Format
The CCL is open to teams representing accredited higher-education institutions. Schools field teams of a minimum of four and a maximum of eight players. Schools may field multiple teams, subject to the roster rules below.
Registered teams are divided into divisions, then groups, based on the 30-day peak Chess.com blitz ratings of their top four players at the time of registration. The top division consists of eight teams all placed in Group A. All other divisions consist of sixteen teams divided into two groups of eight. Each group competes in a seven-week round-robin Regular Season, followed by Playoffs. Teams are divided into Groups A and B based on their time zones and playing time preferences.
Divisions and Multiple Teams
If a school fields multiple teams, players will be distributed based on rating. If a school has multiple teams, no player can be higher rated than the top four players of the school's higher rated team(s). Schools cannot have more than one team per division.
Roster Rules
- Team rosters must have between four and eight players.
- All players must have completed a minimum of 25 rated blitz games on Chess.com by the registration deadline.
- Teams may add players to their rosters mid-season starting in Week 2, provided that:
- The addition does not increase the average rating of the team's top four players above that of the division cap.
- The addition is made before Week 5.
- A player may substitute onto a team from the same school competing in a higher division. Substitutions from a higher division to a lower division are not permitted, and a player may not be part of more than one lineup in a given week.
- No lineup substitutions are permitted less than 15 minutes from the match start time.
Match Format
All matches are played four-versus-four, all-plays-all, with a 5+2 time control. Team A is the first team named in a given matchup.
| Round | Pairing 1 | Pairing 2 | Pairing 3 | Pairing 4 |
| Round 1 | B4–A1 | B3–A2 | A3–B2 | A4–B1 |
| Round 2 | A1–B3 | A2–B4 | B1–A3 | B2–A4 |
| Round 3 | B2-A1 | B1–A2 | A3–B4 | A4–B3 |
| Round 4 | A1-B1 | A2–B2 | B3–A3 | B4–A4 |
Players earn 1 point for a win, 0.5 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. The first team to reach 8.5 points wins the match. All four rounds are played in the Regular Season, even if a match has already been clinched, as full results count toward tiebreaks. In the Playoffs, if a match is clinched after three rounds, the fourth round is not played.
In the regular season, if a match is tied 8-8 after all rounds, the match will end in a draw.
In the playoffs, if a match is tied 8-8 after all rounds. Round 4 is replayed with swapped colors and a 3+2 time control. If the match remains tied, additional tiebreak games are played with a 1+2 time control until a decisive result is reached.
No-Show Forfeit Loss
Players are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled match start time. Game 1 of each Match will be automatically created at the scheduled start time. Players will have 5 minutes to join their games before their clock starts running. Any player who does not make a move will lose on time. If both players do not connect to their game, the result will be listed as a double-forfeit loss (0-0), and neither player will receive any points. All games in each match will follow the pattern above, with each subsequent Set starting once the previous one has ended. This logic also applies to any overtime Sets. Matches played on official broadcasts may have differing Game forfeit times.
Any Roster that forfeits their match in advance may receive a no-show forfeit loss for the match at the discretion of League Officials.
Any Roster that receives two full-match no-show forfeit losses during the Regular Season may be removed from the Competition.
Finality Of Results
At the discretion of League Officials, any Game played in full will not be open for review, and the results will be considered final. Any match that has a result on Chess.com will be considered final. This does not apply to Games that involve Chess.com User Agreement violations.
Playoff Seeding Tiebreaks
If two or more teams in the same division finish the Regular Season with the same record, the following criteria are applied to break the tie, in order:
- Total board points earned across matches (excluding tiebreaker rounds).
- Forfeit wins count as 8.5 points toward your team's cumulative score.
- Head-to-head record
- Fewer forfeits.
- Average team rating.
If a tiebreaker resolves the standing for one or more teams but at least two teams remain tied, the process restarts from the beginning of the tiebreak criteria for the remaining teams. This continues until no ties remain.
Playoffs
Each division's Playoffs consist of a single-elimination bracket. In Division 1, the top two teams receive a bye in the Quarterfinals round and immediately qualify for the Semifinals. The bottom two teams do not qualify for the playoff bracket. The remaining four qualifying teams will be seeded as follows: A3-A6, A4-A5. The winner between A4-A5 will play against the top-seeded team, and the winner between A3-A6 will play against the second-seeded team.
In Divisions 2 and lower, the top two from each group receive a bye in round one and immediately qualify for the Quarterfinals round. The bottom two teams from each group do not qualify for the playoff bracket. The remaining eight qualifying teams will be seeded as follows: A3-B6, A4-B5, B4-A5, B3-A6.
