THE OUTER COLONIES

Humanity stretched too far, too fast. The outer colonies are a Terran-born project, established with the desire to expand into space before Earth could be left behind. It is home to HUMANS, MUTANTS, and EXTRATERRESTRIALS alike.

The result is a fusion of new technology, sprawling cities, and culture of alien influence. Though Terrans attempted to populate the area with their own familiar ideals, the colonies are home to all walks of life, physical expressions, genders, sexualities, and fashions. Each section is a world unto itself — isolated outposts of survival, red-light districts of cyberpunk influence, well-hidden research facilities, and dazzling districts that show off a disparity of wealth and power throughout.

// THREAT

THE ANOMALY

A deep space phenomenon that occasionally disrupts life as the colonies know it. The leading theory is that it has always been here, sleeping in the dark matter, and humanity's expansion simply woke it. Containment teams use a single shorthand: THE GREY ORIGIN.

Known to cause inexplicable horrors and strange abberations, not limited to; warping space, time, bodies, and perception. During monthly events, the anomaly will rear its ugly head. Expect a disruption of daily life, technology, and society as you know it. Outside of that, feel free to explore and add onto the world!

// FACTIONS

COLONY FACTIONS

Three powers vie for control of the surviving colonies: THE DIRECTORATE, THE COLLECTIVE, and THE VOIDSEEKERS. Perhaps your character finds belonging in none of these factions, and instead walks their own path — a FREELANCER, beholden to no banner, no creed, and no cause but their own.

The DIRECTORATE enforces order by resource control. They established the colonies, and have the most objective power through organized government and strict law enforcement. Their soldiers and allies live the most lavishly.

The COLLECTIVE believes in decentralized survival, recruiting mutants and humans for corporate thievery, espionage, retrieval and marketing of (highly illegal) valueables.

The VOIDSEEKERS revere the anomaly as a god, a galaxywide cult with more than skewed intentions.

COLONY TECHNOLOGY

While we are sci-fi infleunced, we won't be using any fancy terminology or theory without explanation! Think of us as an entry level environment for new and old sci-fi fans.

The newest age technology mostly belongs to the Directorate, and those who dare to pilfer from them. Inventions that interfere with the well-being and order of the colonies, incite terror, or are unsanctioned and unapproved by the Directorate are strongly forbidden, even if the Collective and Voidseekers respectively encourage the opposite for their own gain.

HORROR & ATMOSPHERE

We are not necessarily action focused. Our RP prioritizes dread, mystery, expedition, expansion of personal identities, interpersonal relationships among faction members, explorations of bureocracy, and moral weight over pure combat.

We use light mechanics to measure sanity and keep things interesting! Exposure events reduce your character's Sanity track. At 0, your oc will not die, but they will change. Their goals may shift, their loyalties may become skewed. Ultimately, they may still be written, but what they want or are comprised of will never quite be the same.

RP GUIDELINES

Advanced literate/novella, 2+ paragraphs preferred. AI is NOT tolerated. No permadeath without explicit consent. No godmodding. Strict separation of OOC and IC.

We run on a loose d6 system. When the outcome is uncertain, roll. 1-2: fail. 3-4: succeed with cost. 5-6: clean success. If you'd like to opt out of this system and prefer full control over plotting, no worries! It's optional to do things this way.

◈ TERRAN

Standard-issue human. Adaptable, sometimes cybernetically enhanced, politically relevant, entirely mortal. Terrans in the colonies are regarded as widely from Earth. Their methods for getting to the outer colonies have previously been expensive in nature, catered to classes of wealth or high status on Earth. However, the joining of a workforce serving the Directorate's cause to expand, (either militia, doctor, scientist, and so on), or being smuggled into colony grounds by another faction for their cause, are how the majority of Terrans have come to populate the outer colonies. It is more rare to be born within the colonies as a Terran than to have traveled there. Most faction leadership is Terran.

◆ EXTRATERRESTRIAL

Non-human in origin. Your biology, lifespan, and relationship to the anomaly are your own. Extraterrestrials predate the colonies and carry knowledge that no Terran archive holds. Trust from humans is earned slowly, if at all. Extraterrestrials mostly find the outer colonies to be rather primitive in design, but those who have chosen to interact or align themselves with it have undoubtedly influenced its culture, fashion, language, and more.

◉ MUTANT

Human once. Born to one or both mutant parents, or from experimental treatment using genes, organic matter. Not to be confused with cybernetically augmented Terrans. An umbrella category that 'others' Terrans and former Terrans for benefit and for convenience. Mutations err on the side of science-explained superhuman abilities, (not supernatural or superhero esque), albeit some are considered irregular, or uncategorizeable. In more recent generations, reports have shown that mutated parents are capable of producing genetically altered offspring, though the likelihood is still rare. Highly sought after by the military.

PRIORITY: CRITICAL

SILENT ARCADIA

Colony Arcadia-9, a sister to the outer colonies, has gone dark. The Directorate wants a status report. The Collective wants any survivors. The Voidseekers are suspiciously unaccounted for.

PRIORITY: CRITICAL

GRID 77-ECHO

A ship entered the anomaly and returned suspiciously intact. Their logs are corrupted, emitting a sound that causes hallucinations to those unfortunate to be nearby. Retrieve or destroy.

PRIORITY: HIGH

THE SALVAGE RUN

Wreckage from an unregistered vessel was detected near Waypoint Delta. Three rescue ships were sent. None returned.

PRIORITY: HIGH

WATER COVENANT

Letheia's normally packed intergalatic beaches have been taken over by a group of radical Voidseekers. They refuse to allow tourists until their "terms" are met.

PRIORITY: STANDARD

THE COURIER

A Freelance courier carrying sealed packages has requested escort. She won't say what's in them. She's been crying quietly since she boarded. Whenever she's asked, she claims she's fine.

PRIORITY: STANDARD

STATION UPKEEP

The last three crew to work maintenance requested immediate reassignment and won't say why.

Join us now! Our gates are open until June 9th.

As long as we're having fun! While we aim to provide plenty of events each month, our main goal is to allow everyone time to develop their characters through meaningful plotting and interaction.

Not at all. Voidseeker is designed to be accessible to both newcomers and genre veterans. We avoid heavy jargon without explanation, and our lore is self-contained. We're not your typical sci-fi server and focus most on interpersonal dynamics and character building, so we hope you'll give us a chance!

While our examples might be short-winded, the more you expand on what the template gives you, the better! (2-3 paras for more detailed sections is a good idea!) Spend lots of time familiarizing yourself with the lore! While the ROLE options given to you on the website aren't the only way to go, they're good suggestions for where to start if you don't have a strong preference or are just starting out.

We prefer subjectively helpless characters, given the focus of struggle in the colonies (both because of the anomaly, and humanity's own hubris.) The stronger the character, or the more resources they have at their disposal, the more we expect some sort of limitation or drawback to be implemented.

If pitching a particularly strong MUTANT, perhaps they were leashed as a soldier by the DIRECTORATE, following orders, unable to publically fall out of line. If going the ROYAL or POLITICIAN route, perhaps they're stuck beneath someone's thumb, unable to express their own opinions in Parliament despite their personal cause.) Whether self-imposed or situational, explore a limitation (and how they might be working around it!)

Unlike the ROLE list, we do expect your character to be aligned with one of these factions upon entry. If they are an outlier, make them a FREELANCER! As for how your character joins one, simply write it into their backstory! We'll let you know and workshop with you if we find something to be unfeasible, we're aware our current lore leaves room for interpretation, and that's purposeful! We encourage people to both follow the grain and come prepared with worldbuilding ideas.

You may apply for up to two characters. If you've been with us for awhile and have shown substantial activity, you may eventually apply for a third. Alts will preferably belong to a different faction than your main. We may enforce a cap without proven activity to keep the roster manageable, and to keep faction secrets less broadly known.

We are a 21+ server. Violence, psychological horror, and morally complex scenarios are permitted and encouraged. Explicit sexual content must be tagged and cleared with your fellow mun. Real-world hate speech and harassment are never acceptable in any channel, IC or OOC.

Every month, GMs run a server-wide event tied to the Grey Origin anomaly. Events are posted in #uncharted and unfold over 2–3 weeks. Participation is optional but affects colony-wide story outcomes. Some events carry permanent consequences for characters who engage. The theme will vary each month, as well as the content, but be prepared to be occasionally paired up to plot with other muns!

Not unless you want them to. Permadeath requires explicit written consent from any players involved. Characters can be seriously injured, changed by anomaly exposure, or removed from play in other ways — but death is never forced on you. The sanity system provides a meaningful alternative for dramatic character shifts.

We ask for at least two posts per month within rp threads. OOC engagement does not count. Real life happens — just communicate in #ooc-lounge if you need to slow down. Members who go radio silent for 14+ days (no ooc posting) without notice may be marked inactive and their threads put on hold.

We use a light d6 system. Roll when the outcome of an action is genuinely uncertain. On a 1–2 you fail. On a 3–4 you succeed with a complication. On a 5–6 you succeed cleanly. Your character's stats influence how GMs interpret outcomes at their discretion. If you'd like to opt out of this system and prefer full control over plotting, no worries! It's optional to do things this way.

You should avoid concepts rooted in high fantasy or characters reliant on magic or magic system tropes. (ie: magical girls. sorry madoka.) We'd like submissions to veer more toward the characters you'd find in Pathologic, Resident Evil, or Fear and Hunger, rather than Beastars, Genshin Impact, or Brand New Animal. Keep your character grounded within the themes of the server. Ask GMS for workshopping help if you feel out of your depth, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

We'd love if you use your own art! Any style is welcome, but AI is NOT allowed in art or writing. Piccrew, credited art on pinterest or twitter, commissions, and irl fcs are fine as well!

What is possible: Communication across planets and space, high-speed ships for travel and temporary or long-term living, early-stage cloning, genetically augmented people (mutants), cyber augumentations. What isn't yet widely available: teleportation, time travel, and most fully sentient robots or androids. This may change at a later time!
