Japanese culture has repeatedly appeared through various little interests of mine over the years. I’ve greatly enjoyed some manga and anime, with One Piece being a part of my life for over a decade now. I find great resonance in Zen teachings. Japanese aesthetics are stunning, and its gardens and prints are some of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen. So, when I saw ‘Modern Japan - History and Culture’ at a second-hand book store, I grabbed it.

When my S.O and I started dating we always teased each other about who’s better at ‘Achtung, Die Kurve!’. It’s a 2D local co-op flash game in which you draw a line behind you and mustn’t collide with the lines or the walls. There are also some power-ups that add spice to the game. It’s as fun as it is simple. Anyway, flash reached its end of life on January 1st, 2021, mostly due to security risks, so we couldn’t play and prove who’s better.

I live in Jerusalem. As such, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict surrounds me. Even though it plays such a great role in the shaping of my society, most people don’t make any effort to truly understand what’s going on.

We are fed by rumors and prejudice. We crown demons and martyrs as easily as we open up our phones. I too didn’t know enough to justify the confidence I was talking about the subject.

Bill Wurtz’s “history of the entire world, i guess” is a masterpiece. In under 20 minutes, he covers hundreds of fascinating events and concepts. The pace is crazy fast, with one-second jingles telling the creation of religions and the fall of civilizations. It is so fast and fun to watch I didn’t realize that if I pause and read about the subjects Bill mentions so briefly I could actually learn a lot.

Initial Scan & FTP

I started with a fast nmap scan:

nmap -A -T4 -oN initial_scan.txt 10.10.10.191

Which returned this information:

Afterward, I ran a scan of all TCP ports, but it didn’t provide new information.

I tried to contact with the ftp service in several ways, which is quite stupid in retrospect as the scan shows it is closed.

Deployment and reverse image search

After the machine deployed I opened the website and got prompted by this friendly clown:

I guess most of you recognized him right off the bat as Pennywise from the Movie IT. I didn’t, so I used reverse image search to find who he is. Google didn’t provide any good output, but TinEye did.

The website has a login section. TryHackMe prompts us to guess a user name, so we’ll use good old “admin”. Here’s the Hydra command to brute-force the web form:
