Tom Congdon reposted thisTom Congdon reposted this🧠 Funded PhD Studentship | Paediatric Brain Tumours, Neuroimaging & Cognitive Outcomes Interested in neuroscience, clinical psychology, neuroimaging, and child health research? My group is offering a fully funded PhD studentship investigating how brain tumour treatments, particularly radiotherapy, affect the developing brain and long-term cognitive outcomes in children starting in January 2027. The successful candidate will analyse one of the UK's largest paediatric neuroimaging datasets (>1,700 participants), combining advanced MRI analysis with cutting-edge OPM-MEG technology to examine brain structure, function, and cognition following treatment. Based within Aston University's Institute for Health and Neurodevelopment (IHN), the project offers interdisciplinary training in neuroimaging, cognitive assessment, clinical research, and data science, alongside close collaboration with leading clinicians and scientists. Through a long-standing partnership, Aston University researchers have worked with PFE Medical across multiple Knowledge Transfer Partnerships to translate research into solutions being developed for NHS settings - improving patient safety, efficiency and sustainability. An initial project with researcher Dr Thien Duong led by Dr Andy Sutherland created an award-winning automated endoscope cleaning system. This led to two further projects in infection control (Professor Kate Sugden) and waste reduction (Professor Paul Topham) - showing how collaboration can drive ongoing innovation across academia, industry and the NHS. The endoscope cleaning and infection control projects were supported by the significant contribution of Dr Tony Worthington, who co-supervised both. Tom Congdon reacted on thisTom Congdon reacted on thisHuge honour for myself and Omar Qutachi to be recognised at the inaugural De Montfort University Research & Innovation Awards 2026, with the Rising Star for Knowledge Exchange Award for our developing spin out, Chromar. Inadvertent bit of irony from my magazine in the background there - starting a spin out is a 'tall order' for sure. But the friendships, networks and relationships built are equally vast, and far outweigh the hardships. There is no need for reflection - the sapling does not look to the forest floor as it reaches for the light - next meeting in the diary, next inflection point being mapped, new people starting in the lab, and up we go. Huge thanks to all that supported us to this point. More fun stuff coming from us very soon. Thank you also to the organisers and to the speakers for an excellent event, really good to see this kind of external engagement coming to DMU. Quote of the day - "if you want to build a great city, create a university and wait 200 years". Lovely reminder of the central role universities play in society. Delighted and genuinely humbled to have been included in the Make UK 130 Honours alongside so many impressive figures from the manufacturing sector. Having spent more than 25 years at Aston University working with businesses, what continues to excite me most is the ability of our academic to add value and how UK manufacturers continually adapt, innovate and embrace new opportunities. This recognition is greatly appreciated, but it really reflects the power of collaboration and the hard work of a fantastic team. The most rewarding part of our work has always been bringing together businesses, researchers and other partners to tackle challenges and deliver real-world impact. I'm incredibly proud of what Aston, Make UK and our teams have achieved together over many years. Make UK is a fantastic champion for the sector and, thanks to the support of many colleagues across the organisation, we've been able to make a difference and I'm confident there is much more to come in the years ahead. On National Manufacturing Day, it's great to celebrate an industry that remains vital to our economy. Thank you to Make UK for this recognition, and congratulations to everyone included in the 130 Honours.

These awards are thoroughly deserved recognition of the difference they make every day. It was an energizing (and yet also exhausting) day at our strategy awayday. ✅Agreeing a set of priorities and approach for our public affairs work. ✅Coming to the happy realisation that our work, which can sometimes feel disparate, really does align and mutually reinforce so well, we just needed to take a step back to see it. ✅Coming up with a plan to activate our civic agreement further this year. ✅Taking the time to reflect on the impact and reach of our small, but mighty, team. It’s such a pleasure to be surrounded by exceptionally clever and hardworking colleagues Lucy Seymour-Smith and Hannah McConaghy. The project aims to identify, map, and evidence the UK’s skills and capability requirements for building resilient critical minerals (CM) recycling chains. Delighted to share our new article, now available open access in 'Advanced Functional Materials'! Well done to Niamh Fox (Department of Materials - University of Manchester) for leading this great collaboration with Etienne Rognin and the outstanding team of Maggie Horst (UCSF School of Pharmacy) and Yan Xia (Stanford University Department of Chemistry). We study an ultrahigh molecular weight polymechanophore system, comparing mechanoactivation by localised flows in ultrasonication with production-relevant nozzle flows, in work focused on bringing polymer #mechanochemistry towards manufacturing. This excellent work was also based at Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge and is found at this link, so do have a read! https://lnkd.in/e526mh7G
