It doesn't need a new trend every week. It keeps improving the same proposition: Better materials. Better functionality. Better fit. Better execution. And the results are anything but boring. - UNIQLO International revenue: +25.9% - Business profit: +45.4% 9 months to May 2026. The real advantage is deeper. Uniqlo receives 39m+ customer requests and complaints every year and feeds that intelligence directly into product development. So the model isn't: Create → launch → move on. It's: Listen → improve → scale → repeat. That is operational compounding. The lesson for CEOs? In a world obsessed with novelty, consistency can become a competitive moat. The real asset isn't the hotel. It’s the ecosystem around it: Brand. Distribution. Loyalty. Data. Technology. More than 50% of IHG’s 2025 room openings came from conversions bringing independent hotels onto that platform. That has changed the growth equation. The winners of asset-light businesses won't necessarily own the most assets. They'll make the most assets more valuable. IHG may look like a hotel company. Supriya Mundra shared thisGUCCI DOESN’T HAVE A PRICING PROBLEM. It has a desirability problem. The numbers tell the story. Gucci’s 2025 revenue fell 22% to €6.0bn, with operating margin dropping to 16.1%. Even after the turnaround began, Q2 2026 revenue was still down 4%. The temptation? Cut prices. Chase volume. Broaden the customer base. That could be the wrong strategy. Luxury cannot discount its way back to desire. Gucci needs to rebuild the value equation. 1️⃣ Fewer. Stronger. Icons. Stop chasing endless product variation. Build a handful of unmistakable Gucci heroes. 2️⃣ Rebuild price architecture. Entry products can recruit. Icons must remain aspirational. Don't flatten the pyramid. 3️⃣ Make craftsmanship visible. At €2,000–€5,000+, customers need to feel why the product is worth it. 4️⃣ Sell the house, not just the handbag. Gucci needs a distinctive cultural point of view—not another cycle of trend chasing. 5️⃣ Prioritise desire before distribution. Fix the brand pull. Then scale it. Because here's the uncomfortable truth: Price is not value. Price is what you charge. Value is what customers believe you're worth. Hermès has protected that gap. Gucci needs to rebuild it. And the lesson extends far beyond luxury: When demand falls, the instinct is to make the product cheaper. The better question is: What made customers want it in the first place, and have we weakened it? Luxury doesn't need more customers at any price. At the Food Health Network conference, an interesting debate was around - Healthy Baskets Make Happy Customers Should retailers make healthy choices easier? I think we’re missing the bigger issue - Price. You can educate consumers. You can label products. You can put healthy food at eye level. But if the healthier option costs more, consumers are still being asked to pay for the privilege of making the “right” choice. Retailers already shape behaviour through: Price. Promotion. Placement. Convenience. So the question isn't whether retailers influence what we eat. They already do. The real question is: What behaviour are we making economically rational? Imagine if healthier choices weren't just available. They were: cheaper + easier + more convenient. That could be a far bigger health intervention than another healthy eating campaign. And perhaps the most interesting challenge for retailers is this: Can you improve health outcomes without destroying the economics of the basket? That’s not a CSR question. Supriya Mundra shared thisMost companies buy growth. I think the smartest companies are increasingly buying time. That is a much bigger shift in consumer M&A. For decades, the logic was Buy: - revenue. - customers. - market share. - growth. But, look at what buyers are actually paying for in 2026. McCormick × Unilever Foods: $44.8bn Not just more revenue. Years of scale, distribution and category leadership. P&G × Thorne: $3.8bn Not just supplements. Years of wellness credibility and premium positioning. Apollo × easyJet: £5.7bn Not just an airline. Slots, network, brand and customer access that can't be built overnight. Frasers × Harvey Nichols: ~£40m Not growth. Brand equity and prime locations acquired at a distressed valuation. And, perhaps the most revealing example: Air Canada’s Aeroplan: C$10bn valuation. The valuable asset isn't the aircraft. It's years of customer behaviour, loyalty and data. The pattern? Great M&A doesn't just buy what a company has today, but, what would take years to build tomorrow. And that changes the question CEOs should ask. Not: “How fast is this business growing?” But: “What would take us five years to build - that we could own tomorrow?” Because the most valuable assets in consumer may increasingly be: - Trust - Distribution - Loyalty - Data - Scarce locations - Category leadership - Proprietary capabilities Growth can be built. Lets look at the model: 🇫🇷 Paris : Le Bon Marché turns retail into culture, events and discovery. 🇨🇳 Shanghai : Louis Vuitton’s The Louis blends retail, dining, art and hospitality into a destination. 🇺🇸 US : Sephora combines stores, beauty services, loyalty, community and digital discovery. 🇯🇵 Japan : Louis Vuitton is extending clienteling beyond the boutique through digital and virtual client advisors. 🌍 Globally : SEPHORA turns customers into participants, not just purchasers. And now AI is entering the journey: Discovery → Inspiration → Advice → Experience → Purchase → Loyalty LVMH is trying to capture value at every stage. That is the bigger lesson. The future of consumer is not about owning the transaction but, about owning more of the relationship around the transaction. For CEOs, five questions follow: 1. Where does your customer journey begin? If it begins with Google, TikTok or ChatGPT, you may already be late. 2. How many times do you monetise the same customer? Product shouldn't necessarily be the only revenue event. 3. Is your store a channel or an experience? If it's only a place to transact, online will eventually compete with it on price and convenience. 4. What does your loyalty data actually enable? Personalisation should drive economics, not just engagement metrics. 5. Who owns discovery? Because whoever owns discovery increasingly influences the purchase. Supriya Mundra shared thisThe more businesses I study, the less convinced I am that growth always comes from serving more customers. Sometimes, growth comes from making the right customers want you more. Hermès is a powerful example. While much of the luxury industry pursued volume through wider distribution, discounts and rapid expansion, Hermès protected something more valuable: DESIRABILITY Its strategy is built around: - Limited availability - Exceptional craftsmanship - Controlled distribution - Long-term trust - Minimal reliance on promotions The result is more than revenue growth. Its pricing power. Many companies interpret customer obsession as saying “yes” to everything: - More products - More promotions - More channels - More customers But the more strategic question is: What should we deliberately choose not to offer, so that what we do offer becomes more valuable? This matters even more in the age of AI. Products can be copied faster. Features can be replicated sooner. Competitors can launch alternatives at unprecedented speed. But scarcity, craftsmanship, trust and customer conviction are much harder to reproduce. The retailers that outperform over the next decade may not have: - The largest assortment - The lowest prices - The most stores They may have the strongest ability to make customers say: “I want this and I’m willing to wait for it.” The lesson from Hermès is not that every business should restrict supply. Scarcity without exceptional value is simply poor service. The real lesson is this: Sustainable growth comes from protecting value, not just increasing volume. Supriya Mundra shared thisThe retail storefront just died. No one sent flowers. Target now sells inside a chat window - no page, no scroll, no "sponsored listing." An AI agent decides what you buy. Retail media is a $200B+ global market, growing ~14% a year. And, Amazon alone owns ~80% of it. Every dollar of that was built on pages: search ads, sponsored listings, banner grids. Conversational commerce has no pages. No grid to bid into. Smart money already sees it: Walmart didn't buy an ad agency, it bought VIZIO, a smart-TV maker, for $2.3B to control the data and screen layer feeding its retail media engine. That's not just a media deal, its an infrastructure land-grab. Expect the same logic to hit conversational commerce: the next acquisitions won't be platforms, they'll be the recommendation engines and agent-orchestration layers deciding what gets said back to the customer. Boards still tracking "digital shelf share" are optimizing for a shelf that's disappearing. Over the past decade, I’ve built, scaled and transformed healthcare businesses across consumer health, digital health and healthcare services — spanning entrepreneurship, new ventures, enterprise transformation, growth and P&L leadership. At first glance, it sounds like a concern. But after 40 years of experience running businesses, I have learnt that it is one of the most important questions a leader can ask. Because failure is not the opposite of success. It is often a part of the journey towards it. Early in my career, failure was something people tried to avoid. People hid mistakes, and often preferred safe decisions. Over time, I realised that the greatest learning comes when we **fail productively** — when we treat setbacks as feedback, reflect on what went wrong, and use those lessons to improve. The best learners are not those who never fail. They are those who: • Experiment despite uncertainty • Ask what the failure is teaching them • Adapt quickly and try again • Share learnings with others Experience alone does not make us better. **Reflection on experience does.** In a rapidly changing world, the ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn is becoming the greatest leadership advantage. So, what if we failed? We learn. We adapt. We grow stronger. The latest findings from Retail Trust and AlixPartners point to a critical moment for U.K. retail leaders to rethink their approach to employee engagement and wellbeing. As AlixPartners Director Laura Bond highlights: “With 52% of retail employees at risk of leaving and presenteeism at a record high, the lack of any seasonal ‘wellbeing lift’ in the data signals the need for a fundamental shift in people strategy. The challenges faced by older millennials, who report the lowest levels of happiness and the highest flight risk, emphasise the importance of leadership-led, tailored interventions that address areas such as career stagnation, stress, and personal growth. While salary satisfaction provides stability, pay alone cannot sustain morale or retention.
