Supporting Rye Lane businesses We understand that the recent temporary closure of Rye Lane for emergency safety works created challenges for many local businesses. We have listened to concerns from traders about reduced footfall and the impact on trade, and we are taking action to help. Current support includes: ✅ Business rates support for eligible businesses affected by the two-week closure ✅ A review of loading arrangements where this can be done safely ✅ Increased engagement and support from our Town Centre team ✅ Working with businesses to encourage more visitors to Rye Lane and support local trade Rye Lane's shops, cafés, restaurants, market stalls and independent businesses play a vital role in Peckham's success. They create jobs, attract visitors and help make the area a vibrant and welcoming destination. 🚀 Creating pathways into work in Elephant and Castle On Wednesday 9 September, residents had the opportunity to get a first look at some of the jobs coming to the new Elephant town centre in the coming months. The new town centre has a target of creating 212 jobs for Southwark residents, creating new opportunities for local people as the development opens. The careers fair also brought together employers and training providers with school and college students and residents looking for work - creating opportunities to connect, explore careers and access advice and support. Events like this play an important role in connecting Southwark residents with local jobs and skills opportunities. By helping residents access employment and build their careers, we’re supporting our ambition to make Southwark more affordable and ensuring every resident has the opportunity to succeed. "Too many communities in Southeast London are still cut off from the tube network. The Bakerloo line upgrade and extension would change that, connecting our residents properly to the rest of the capital, helping unlock 107,000 new homes and 150,000 good jobs, and accelerating the shift away from cars towards cleaner transport, helping us build an affordable, green borough.” - James McAsh, Leader of Southwark Council, made the case for the Bakerloo Line upgrade and extension at the London Real Estate Forum today, talking about how it would unlock jobs, homes and growth. Speaking on a panel alongside Lewisham Mayor Liam Shrivastava, TfL Director of Strategy Christina Calderato, and Mark Williams, director of Central London Forward, Cllr McAsh said the benefits of improved connectivity would extend far beyond south-east London, delivering economic growth across the capital. Cllr McAsh said the increased tax revenues generated by the homes, businesses and economic activity unlocked by the project could cover more than two-thirds of the cost of the extension, and that the challenge was not so much finding the money for the scheme itself, but securing the upfront financing needed to get it underway. Highlighting the impact on Southwark, he said the extension would transform the Old Kent Road, where the first phase of redevelopment is already under way. However, he noted that progress on the next phase is dependent on the Bakerloo Line extension receiving the go-ahead. The Bakerloo Line extension has long been identified as a catalyst for growth, regeneration, and housing delivery. The message from the panel was clear: by investing in new transport connections today, London can unlock opportunities that will benefit communities and the wider economy for decades to come.

65 new council homes – another step towards a more affordable Southwark 🏠 At the Ledbury Estate, we’re turning 65 homes that would have been private homes into council homes instead. The Ledbury Estate renewal will deliver 334 new council homes and 340 affordable homes overall, alongside new green spaces, additional play areas and better connections for pedestrians and cyclists. We’re using unspent Right to Buy receipts to fund these 65 council homes. This will help us create more council housing for local people while reducing the amount of borrowing needed to deliver the estate renewal. We’ll continue working closely with residents as the renewal progresses, helping to create a more affordable, safe and green Southwark. In 2016, Dolly Parton launched the Imagination Library project in Southwark, which gives away free books to children every month until their fifth birthday. Since then, children across our borough have received more than 800,000 free books. Sarah Tucker and her son Wayne, from Camberwell, have benefited from this initiative. Sarah says that it's helped to instil a lifelong love of reading in Wayne, who loved receiving his books every month. Yesterday, BBC New London ran a piece on the impact of the Imagination Library and spoke to Danna Johnson, one of our fantastic Library staff members who makes this work possible, and Deputy Leader Victor Chamberlain on why this scheme is so important.
