A lot has changed, but the need for people to come together hasn't. 💚 When Operation Groundwork began in 1982, it tackled environmental decline, unemployment and disconnected communities. Today, the challenges we face look different. But our solution remains the same, empowering people to improve the places where they live, work and grow, taking practical action on their terms. From creating greener communities and supporting young people in getting meaningful jobs to helping communities build resilience, the spirit of Operation Groundwork continues to shape our work every day. Would you have been a FROG? In 1982, Operation Groundwork invited people to become a Friend of Operation Groundwork. Join the FROGs was the rallying call. People of all ages and walks of life came together to plant trees, improve local spaces, share skills, and most importantly, make a difference in their communities. Experience wasn't required. Enthusiasm was. From volunteer-led conservation projects to community-organised festivals, our original FROGs helped lay the foundations for the Groundwork we know today. Did you know Groundwork began as Operation Groundwork back in 1982? Created during a time of social and economic crisis, Operation Groundwork aimed to transform neglected and forgotten places and bring communities together. What started in St Helens and Knowsley as a pioneering environmental regeneration project quickly grew into a national movement. More than 40 years later, the belief that communities can create lasting change still sits at the heart of everything we do. If you’re a grassroots, community-led organisation in England delivering change and drawing on lived experience, you could be eligible for funding of up to £5,000. Whether you’re tackling homelessness, supporting those facing cost-of-living pressures, supporting early childhood development, or delivering projects that prevent violence against women and girls, refugees, or asylum seekers, the funding you receive can support project delivery, cover core organisation costs, or both. Applications are open to grassroots community organisations including charities, community groups, social enterprises and more. Applications close on 30 September 2026 at 5 pm.
