Feeding a baby in public shouldn't require courage. But the data says otherwise. With 1 in 3 UK mothers feeling uncomfortable breastfeeding in public, and 11% facing active shaming, the problem clearly isn't the mothers. It's the environment around them. From the runway to the London Underground, we have always taken a stand to back a woman’s right to feed wherever, whenever, and however she chooses. We were not expecting these whopper statistics from our latest You Gov National Noise public insight survey, released this week for Mothers Day, or the sheer scale of the problem to solve that it presents to industry, all the more tangible when the population majority of mothers and parents share directly what they’re struggling with every day. Let’s look at the figures… Nearly six in ten (59%) mothers say household noise leaves them feeling overwhelmed. 97% of mums say that having quiet time is important to their overall wellbeing. 44% of mums say that household noise impacts stress levels in the home. 84% of parents think that a quieter home environment positively impacts their family’s well-being. Over a quarter (27%) of mums say household noise disrupts sleep in the home. These findings further inform our work at Quiet Mark, in addition to over 100 market-wide product categories we assess, this year we are sound measuring more maternity and baby categories to profile outstanding quietest products and solutions to make it super easy for millions of parents to find the best third party expert verified technical solutions to reduce noise everywhere at home. Notice anything different here 👀?! Breast pumping in the office. Bet you wouldn’t have noticed unless I pointed it out? Honestly, innovation like this which truly changes lives. I’m not being dramatic - It’s allowed me to go back into the office one day a week. To not be chained to a wall socket feeling like a cow being milked. To multitask, to work and feed at the same time. But on a broader level, it makes the whole experience less weird / intrusive / restrictive / “should I hide this?” / “is someone going to be offended?” and all the feelings / opinions that still seem to surface any time breasts or breastfeeding enter the chat (let’s see how the LinkedIn algorithm handles that). That’s something I didn’t appreciate until it was me. Normalising this stuff shouldn’t be radical. But until it isn’t, I’ll keep talking about it.
