We're putting maternity and neonatal care back at the top of the NHS agenda. Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Yvette Cooper joined the National Maternity and Neonatal Taskforce and all eight expert reference groups, to discuss the next steps for the national action plan. They discussed action needed to ensure women and families are always listened to, and truly heard, when it comes to their or their baby’s care. Families who have experienced loss and harm sat alongside clinicians, academics, charities, regulators, and parliamentarians.

Martha’s Rule is to be expanded to A&E departments and waiting rooms across England. The phased rollout will give more patients, families and NHS staff a way to raise concerns if someone’s condition is getting worse and they feel this is not being listened to. More than 19,000 calls have been made through Martha’s Rule since it was introduced in September 2024, helping patients and families raise concerns about their own or someone else’s care and request an urgent review. It’s World Alzheimer’s Day 🫂 Minister for Social Care Alison McGovern spoke at Alzheimer's Society’s annual conference about improving support, speeding up diagnosis and bringing new research and improvements into dementia care sooner. We will act on Baroness Louise Casey’s recommendation to appoint a Dementia Tsar, backed with real expertise.

Yvette Cooper chaired the National Maternity and Neonatal Taskforce for the first time last week. We set up the Taskforce earlier this year to oversee the improvements we know are needed in NHS maternity and neonatal care. It will develop a new national action plan based on the findings of the Baroness Amos investigation and recommendations of the Ockenden Review and Thirlwall Inquiry. The Taskforce is made up of maternity and neonatal experts including representatives of families, clinicians and academics. We're working together to make sure every woman, baby and family gets the safe and consistent care they deserve.

From today, around 1,000 patients with advanced breast cancer will be able to get the life-changing drug Enhertu on the NHS. This follows changes we've made in how new treatments are assessed, so more people can benefit from them. It's also thanks to the campaigners and charities who pushed for this moment.
