🍻 Digital ID is now legal for alcohol age checks in England and Wales. That’s great news if you’re the person ordering the pint, but what about the person on the other side of the bar? We headed back to The Blue Posts in Soho to chat to one of their bartenders and find out how digital ID could make checking ages quicker and help keep the queue moving during a busy shift. Digital ID is now a legal way to check someone’s age when they’re buying alcohol in England and Wales📱 If you sell alcohol, you can accept digital ID alongside physical IDs, giving customers a simple, private way to prove they’re over 18, while making age checks quicker and easier for your business. There’s a lot to like about that, including less time spent checking physical IDs and fewer staff call-outs at self checkouts. And it doesn’t have to be complicated either. 🍻 Yesterday, the law changed to allow licensed businesses in England and Wales to accept digital IDs as proof of age when selling alcohol. So, Robin, our CEO, headed to The Blue Posts in Soho and used his Yoti ID to buy a drink - the first alcohol purchase ever made this way. We’ve been working towards this moment since 2014, so what better way to celebrate than with a pint? 🍺 Here’s how it went 👇

🍾 It’s official! Businesses in England and Wales can now accept digital IDs when checking someone’s age for alcohol sales. We’ve been working towards this since Yoti was founded in 2014, so it’s a pretty special day for us. For shops, supermarkets, clubs, pubs and bars, digital ID is now another way to check someone is over 18. And the great news is that businesses don’t need to rip out their existing systems and start again. 🔧 We’re working with technology providers, including Diebold Nixdorf, Flooid, StrongPoint, Kestronics and Zebra Technologies, to bring digital age checks to the point-of-sale and self-checkout systems businesses already use. Smaller businesses can use our free ID Checker app to check digital IDs with a smartphone or other compatible device. Yoti ID and Post Office EasyID have already been used to prove age for things like energy drinks, vapes and tattoos. Now they can be used for alcohol too. When you’re trying to strengthen fraud prevention, it’s tempting to add more checks to the customer onboarding process. We think a better starting point is understanding exactly what you need to know first 🔎 A document check can tell you that an identity document looks genuine or that the information on it is valid. It can’t tell you, on its own, that the person using it is the rightful owner. Comparing the person’s face with the photo on their document can help with that. Liveness and injection attack detection can help spot attempts to get around these checks using photos, pre-recorded video, masks or deepfakes. 👤 Each check tells you something different, so knowing what you need to find out makes it easier to choose the checks that will give you the right information. It can also help keep the experience straightforward for genuine customers. Fraud techniques keep changing, so verification processes need to change with them.
