Open call for a project manager on the Marie Curie Doctoral Network I lead

Research interests

I am mainly interested in formal methods and programming languages for distributed and mobile systems, such as service oriented systems (including microservices and serverless), and for quantum systems. I aim at providing languages, analysis techniques and tools to support the programming of correct concurrent and distributed applications. I am currently active in reversible computing (see also our overview book), and in particular reversible debugging of Erlang programs, choreographic programming, and quantum computing.

There will be PhD positions on reversible computing for energy efficiency funded by a Marie Curie Doctoral Network (see the EU factsheet) coordinated by myself, that will start in February 2026, with PhDs selected during summer 2026 to start at the beginning of November 2026. Maria Curie salary is VERY good for Italian standards. Due to Marie Curie rules, these positions are for students coming from abroad (more precisely, who have spent less than 12 months in the host country in the last 3 years), but beyond Bologna positions in the same network will also be available at University of Copenhagen, University of Southern Denmark, University of Manchester, AGH University of Science and Technology (Poland), CNRS (Sophia Antipolis, France), and Vaire Computing (London, UK). On the same project, I am looking for a project manager. The candidate need to have a master degree in computer science or related topics, and interest in project management. He/she will help me and UNIBO research office in managing the network. The call is CURRENTLY OPEN. Contact me if you are potentially interested.

Collaboration with industry

I am participating to the Jolie project, aiming at developing Jolie, a language for programming service oriented applications. Jolie has born at the Computer Science Department of University of Bologna, inside the European FET-GC2 project Sensoria. Jolie is currently developed by the Computer Science Department of University of Bologna and by company ItalianaSoftware.

Software development

Besides participating to the Jolie project above, I am contributing to the following projects:

CauDEr: a Causal-consistent Reversible Debugger for Erlang, and a tracer producing traces to be analyzed
JIoT: support for IoT protocols in the Jolie language
AIOCJ: a choreographic language for adaptive distributed applications
ChorEr: choreography extraction from Erlang source code

Awards

Distinguished Reviewer Award in the "31st European Symposium on Programming" (ESOP 2022), part of the European joint conferences on theory & practice of software (ETAPS)
The paper "Reversibility in the higher-order pi-calculus" by myself, Claudio Antares Mezzina and Jean-Bernard Stefani, in Theoretical Computer Science 625 is part of the list of Most Cited Theoretical Computer Science Articles published since 2015 by Theoretical Computer Science Journal.
The paper "The stream-based service-centred calculus: a foundation for service-oriented programming" by Luís Cruz-Filipe, myself, Francisco Martins, António Ravara and Vasco Thudichum Vasconcelos, in Formal Aspects of Computing 26(5) is part of the list of Notable Books and Articles in Computing of 2014 by ACM Computing Reviews.
My PhD thesis has been awarded the prize for the best PhD theses in Theoretical Computer Science by the Italian Chapter of EATCS in 2007.

Teaching

I am currently teaching Computer Architecture (first cycle degree in Computer Science), Service-Oriented Software Engineering (second cycle degree in Computer Science) and Computational Methods for Bioinformatics (second cycle degree in Bioinformatics). See here for more information.
I will soon start teaching Introduction to Quantum Computing and Microservices Software Architectures.
