CIGRE "China Day" Event in Shenzhen: Advancing Global Energy Transition with Low-carbon Digitalized Power Systems

The International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) Steering Committee meeting and its "China Day" event took place in Shenzhen recently. The event, hosted by CIGRE and organized by the CIGRE Chinese National Committee, the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, and China Southern Power Grid (CSG), marked the first time a Chinese company co-organized the CIGRE Steering Committee meeting and its associated event. Experts and scholars from various countries, along with representatives from Chinese energy companies convened to discuss the global low-carbon energy transition.

CIGRE President Michel Augonnet praised CSG for its achievements in developing the new electric power system and promoting a clean energy-oriented power supply structure. He fully endorsed CSG's philosophy of promoting the construction of a new energy system and a new electric power system through digitization and greener development. Augonnet expressed CIGRE's willingness to strengthen cooperation with CSG, working together towards net zero-carbon development, shaping a new energy future, fostering greater consensus on green, low-carbon, and sustainable power grid development, and contributing more wisdom and efforts to the global energy transition.

The CIGRE Vice President – Technical and Technical Council Chair Marcio Szechtman highlighted that the ongoing energy transition brings forth new demands for grid equipment, grid flexibility, grid planning, digitization, and sustainability. He underscored the necessity for elevating the levels of digitization and automation in grid equipment to address the impacts of environmental and climate change.

In his keynote speech, Rao Hong, chief scientist of CSG, highlighted that in the coming years, new energy sources will gradually become the primary power source, and the proportion of power electronics in the power system will increase rapidly, posing new challenges to the grid. Energy storage, electric vehicles, and other flexible resources are crucial elements that must not be overlooked and will bring new development opportunities. CSG attaches great importance to cooperation and exchanges with CIGRE and is committed to advancing the innovative development of global energy and power technology with international partners.

In recent years, CSG has implemented a new strategy for energy security and actively promoted the establishment of a new era of open and win-win international energy cooperation. Since joining CIGRE in November 2005, the collaboration with CIGRE has been steadily deepening. Currently, the number of registered CIGRE members has exceeded 100, which has supported the compilation and publication of two CIGRE Green Books (FACTS and HVDC). The upcoming CIGRE Paris Session 2024, scheduled for August, will see CSG delivering the keynote speech on the opening panel for the first time and participating in the theme discussion "A Roadmap to Energy Systems of the Future".
